22 Magnum Handi who has em (I now have mine!)
« on: October 31, 2009, 03:51:45 PM »
The reason I ask, is that at one of my local haunts they have one in there with Survivor Stock in 22 Mag for just $139.00 and it looks in pretty decent shape for the price.  I thought this would be a decent little varmint/preditor whacker within reasonable distances.

Nothing wrong with a 22 mag.
The one I have shoots pretty good with CCI TNT ammo.
5 shots in a nickle at a 100 most of the time.
Everyone is all hopped up with the newer rounds like the 17s and all and they are great, but the 22 mag is still a very good round also.

Yeap, if you want it and can use it, a 22 Mag is always nice to have around for a lot of things.
Buy it and enjoy.
I love all my 22Mags

I have one.
It wears a Weaver 4X
Great rifle.
A friend asked that my buddy and I clean out ground squirrels and rabbits from her horse farm.
Even though it is only a single shot I was able to shoot faster than my buddy with his bolt action 17HMR.
After 8 rounds he would have to spend time reloading his mag, and I was able to keep shooting.
The only down side to it is laying down and using a bipod for multiple shots.

The one thing I have done is price ammo between the 22 Mag and the 17HMR, and the 22 Mag ammo is way cheaper and from what I understand will not get blown off course from the wind like the little 17HMR will.

I used to have one (it's been reamed to 22 Hornet now) and it was a very good shooter. Quarters at 100 yds. were normal for it. GET IT.

I like the little HMR as well, but my heart still lies with my 22 Mags. I Wouldn't dis anyones choice in the matter. Still cheaper ammo is nice.

Jon,
At that price you could hardly go wrong. While I think it's a little on the lite side for the purpose, many guys even use them for coyote.

I have a .22 Mag with a Survivor stock set and a Millet Red Dot. It is my primary Maine Coyote gun for 100 yards and under and has shot 1" groups and under at 100 yards with regularity if I do my part. The gun is up to it everytime. Mine prefers Winchester Silver box, Winchester Black box, and then CCI Maxi-Mags, in that order, but not by much, .01's of an inch really, so for coyote hunting it does not matter. I would feel comfortable at out to about 125-150 max for a coyote, not because of accuracy, but for power reasons. Get it, you will love it!!!....<><>...:)

MSP Ret how ya doing, still got the .35 Whelen barrel?  Dang ya just don't what ya got till its gone.  But getting back on toppic, I will go over and secure the deal on this later today if its still there.  I got a nice .22 LR bolt gun, but there's just something about that .22 Mag that I have missed for many years now.

Now this will give me an extra stock set too  ::)

Run out and get it or you'll be kicking yourself. A few weeks ago my brother told me on a friday night about a H&R ultra 22mag at a local shop for $150. I couldn't make it there until Monday night and it was gone. I should have changed my plans and went Saturday morning.

I had them hold it for me, as I can not get to my funds until tomorrow.  But when I get it home, I have a Weaver CV3 that I'm going to put on it for now.  You might say, I'm a real happy camper over this one  ::)

Oxy's are good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least that is what our clients (defendants in criminal matters) believe. Of course they don't use them to alleviate pain.

Montanan, the .35 Whelen barrel still resides here on a dedicated frame and will for a long time if it is at all possible, gotta love those .35's...

Get that .22 Mag you will really love it, do not let it escape you. You may need to shoot 50 or so rounds before you get great groups (or you may get lucky and won't have to). Mine does not like a squeaky clean barrel and even if I just drag a boresnake through it I still shoot a couple or 3 rounds for it to feel comfortable enough to deliver it's best. Congratulations on a great find, that price goes back a year or two....<><....:)

Got 2, an Ultra and one with the plastic stock.  That one likes Rem. 40 gr and the Ultra I haven't played with enough to know what she likes.  Paid 140 or 150 for the Ultra used, less than that for the other new, but that was a couple years ago.  DP

Dang paypal, sitting here waiting for some money to be put into my bank from stuff I sold....  I can't wait to run over and pick up my new little H&R Sporter .22 WMR.  Gonna pull the scope off of my TOZ 17 .22 LR and put the Weaver CV3 on it, and the Simmons 3x9x40mm on the Sporter.

Then got some playing around to do, in sighting them both back up..... gives me an excuse to have some fun  ::)

Here in MI we're only allowed rimfires for fox and coyote at night.  That's why Patty and I have the .17HMR and the .22 mag.  They're both very effective at night shooting distances.

As a kid, a couple of buddies and I hunted a farm in Upstate NY.  One year, for Christmas, about 45 years ago, we gave the farmer a Mossberg .22 mag. in thanks.  It became his "Tractor Gun"....put a scabard right on the machine.  Between you, me, and the lamppost, I know he kept his freezer full of venison with it. :o

Pete the idea of a tractor gun appeals to me. I have driven my tractor to with in 50 feet of coyotes and feral cats. Actually I thought of an H&R in .22 mag. I have carried my single-six but it get uncomfortable after a while.

Tractor guns are  nice and come in many shapes and sizes. Probably 30-35 or so years ago, through another Trooper in the western part of the state I bought a tractor gun from a farmer who's farm was out in the sticks right next to the New York Border. I got it for $50 because it needed a firing pin. I bought it because I wanted a nice classic double barrel shotgun. Oh yes, I forgot to ad, it was (is) a nice L.C. Smith Field Grade 12 gauge which the farmer carried on his tractor for vermin and shots of opportunity...
