deer camp
« on: October 31, 2009, 03:53:14 PM »
Two more weeks, man I can't wait. I'm getting really anxious.

We're camping in Ferne Clyffe again the 14th thru the 22nd. If anyone is in the area stop on by. You're welcome to share our fire.

You'll recognize our camp, we have on of those big white tarp covered carport things we use for a mess tent and there will be two cabelas xwt tents on the same site. I bought one and one of the other guys liked it so much he bought one too.

Grimjim, I see your just southeast of Carbondale(where my son lives), beautiful country, we visited this country this September. I've a good friend who camps and hunts on the edge of Shawnee National Forest. Best of luck this year.

Don't brag so much about the fancy tents. Some of us can only afford Wal-Mart.

I wasn't bragging. I was calling Joe a copycat. Behave or I'll bring Brad down there myself and he'll make sure you're tucked in.

Just got back today.
Not a good year down there. The rut isn't on yet. 70 degrees last Sunday.
I got a nice 8 pointer though. 1/2 hour before dark on Saturday.

Anyone else get anything?

Congrats Jim  8)

I hunted hard the three days and knew I would have some trouble with the temp as bee's and other flying insects were up and around by 9:00am.

Other troubles were flooding here and there along with standing corn.

On day one I had a couple of young twins browsing\playing near me. One had antler gouges on it so I knew the Buck had chased them away from Mamma.
Day two reveled a small doe which I also let work on through. Day three, Nothing.

I will only be able to hunt two of the four days in the second season and hope that it will be productive for at least a good meat deer. We have more rain in the forecast so the standing corn will probably remain :(
Still, It was great getting out there.

Had a good time on pvt land N of Peoria. The farmer always wants deer gone. Much of his crops are like big food plots, lots of cover with a smallish river running through. I took a good sized 9 ptr & 4 does, all with the Knight. The partners did well with a 13 & a big 8 & some does. I can't go next gun session but should make it for the later M-L season. The weather was a little warm mid day, but the winds & rest was pretty good. The standing corn didn't help. I quit counting after 23 deer opening morning by about 10:30 A.M.. When it was time to get serious I took 3 deer from one stand in about a 90 min period. I did notice deer come by less than 10 min after a shot.

FYI respose to below; I bought the $300 non-res buck tag. I had 4 non-res doe tags at $15 each. After that I chipped in to the buddy $500(he leases the property) over the year for any deer season, coyotes, & turkey hunting. I also bought the non-res regular hunting license & habitat stamp. There is a place to stay, so no hotel fees. The taxidermy costs are usually higher with hunting in IL. I've been doing this a few years, due to possible changes with the property it may not go on forever. I have 'up North' land I go to also, but I've somewhat voted with my wallet on the U.P. of MI deer hunting. They'd rather feed the wolves. I'll be back in IL for the M-L hunt, 2 anterless tags.

1sourdough, sounds like a very good weekend, to me, for central Illinois? You didn't mention how much it cost you but, I'm betting it wasn't cheap? Glad someone had some luck, even if they hunt on a non-resident tag. Correct me if I'm wrong but, I was under the impression non resident hunters couldn't take more than one doe and one antlered deer per season, in Illinois(the same as residents)? Congrats on your success.

To add to the above; with the 'random daily drawings' you could get a bunch of anterless tags at $15 each(res or no-res). Any anterless leftovers go over the counter at $15 each until they are gone. A non-res has the 2 buck limit,bow,gun,M-L, which is the same as a res I think. That would not prevent a guy from getting either sex tags for a 3 seasons(if you draw) & just eating the 3rd if you get 2 by other means. The non-res lease holder knows the tag/permit issue well.
