Coyote in the city????
« on: October 15, 2003, 09:09:27 AM »
Looking out my office window into a field I saw a coyote.  The scrub field is just waiting to be made into an office.  This field is between a hosp and an interstate.  The animal was just lazily walking around and laying down 80% of the time.  The grass is maybe calf high so it is totally visable.  I am wondering if this would be natural...meaning....I thought these were timid animals, very skittish.
My first thought was it was either hit by a car or sick.  I almost called a CO but haven't yet.  What do you guys think?

ghostZ,

In my opinion the coyote was either hurt or sick(rabies maybe?  right time of the year for it).  I would have called the animal control and let them handle it.  Lawdog

Ummm, actually, it is perfectly natural to have coyotes in the city.  I live in a large city, and there is a park like field across from my house with a creek.  Every night like clockwork the pack starts a howlin', and I go out there with my Surefire and look at them.  I hve even called to them once from my balcony.  So far I have counted eight in the pack, plus about 20 on the base I am stationed at (about 1 nautical mile away).  Coyotes are like any other animal, if they find food and are not threatened in that environment, then they will thrive.  In no way was what you saw bizarre.  I get pissed off everytime I go coyote hunting and don't see jack, and then come home and watch TV to hear and see eight coyotes gathering up.  heh heh.

This contrast in behavior doesn't just exist in heavy populated vs. less populated areas.  The same Coyotes will react different to humans from ranc to ranch where I live.  They also react different to certain vehicles at times.  A large blackish Coyote will run like hell from my truck because I have missed him twice. :?   but I was in a friends truck and the coyote just sat at 100 yds from us.  Unfortunantly, my freind missed too. :?   To get him I think I will have to get a tune up and paint my truck.  If I walk he takes off.  If I am horseback he'll sit and watch me.

The same coyotes will feel more comfortable if they are in a place that they haven't been shot at too.  Such as in town or a ranch that doesn't get hunted.

To make sure coyotes stay easier to kill, don't miss.  A shot coyote is not an educated one.  A shot at coyote is very hard to kill, therefore a much larger potential problem.

The coyotes can survive anywhere. I live in a west suburb and I see them every where. They can be under your porch. The strange thing  I notice is here in central Iowa is the rabbits are back in big numbers. deer population way out of hand, coyotes and fox running in the suburbs. So what are they eating Big Macs? I am remembered of a phrase from where I can't remember "when its all over here the only creatures left will be the coyote and the cockroach" my apologies as I probably messed that quote up.

i agree with most here, yet i beleive the yote u  saw was proboble (maybe) a sick one, yotes r the most adaptive critters on earth and they can get quite comfortable  around humans, i guess it matters on what time a day it was more than anything, i think the jim was well spoken when he stated his phrase ( whehtere it be right or wrong   who knows)
