Well then Dale then you have a 93 spanish mauser action. You will have to do a chamber cast to make sure of the caliber. It could be a swede barrel fitted to a 93 action.

Here is a picture of the bolt face. I do see now where the bolt handle had been cut and replaced. It is a little hard to make out in the picture but I can see where it was re welded. Dale

I don't know if this means much but earlier today I removed the front base. It was stamped 1923 under the base. Dale

Would this be called a small ring or large ring then? I need to know this to get a stock for it. Thanks Dale

The 93 had the square bolt face as shown in the bottom of the bolt face. It was found to be completley uneccesary for feeding reliability and was done away with when they revised the rifle in the model 95. Some 95s were even built on the older 93 actions with the bolt face cuts but with a round bolt. Going from the square bolt face to the round cut machining tremendously.

It is a small ring Dale.

You have a money pit Dale- going back to your original question.
 325.00+ a new stock+ scope, base, rings= $700.00+

You could have gotten a vanguard scoped combo (with the caliber stamped on the barrel) and 5 boxes of bullets for a couple hundred less than what you will have in that beater gun when you get it ready to hunt.

I managed to get it for $280.00 then I sold the 4 power scope on it for $40.00. So I have $240.00 in this rifle and all I really need is a decent scope. I am sure I can get a good stock for less than $150.00 and I don't mind spending the money if it is going to be something I like and keep for a very long time. I don't see a money pit. Dale

It would seem I can only find stocks for 96 and 98 actions. :( Maybe it won't won't look so bad if I just paint it black. ::) Dale

Krylon for Plastic.

that is not the original bolt handle it is a small ring Mauser that has been sporterized  the caliber should be stamped somewhere on the barrel if not and you are in doubt do a chamber cast. The bolt stop/ release is a dead giveaway to its mauser origins. Someone did a nice job on it.

Hey while you have the gun apart and are painting the stock.....
You can either get a chamber cast kit ( what ever one advertises here) and a Ctg of the World.
OR take it to a gun smith to do it.
would be a shame if you stuck a 6.5 Swede in there and damaged your pretty paint job.

It is not that I am not satisfied. I have concerns now that it is a 6.5x55 swede. When I put a 6.5x55 in it and pull the trigger I still want me and the gun to be in one piece. You said you did the work on it. Maybe it might not be a bad idea to tell us what you know about it and what work you have done to it. I like the 6.5x55 Swede and have wanted one for some time because I feel it is a rifle I can do it all with. Dale

I was just going to say the same thing.
If Cannon 6 was the guy who owned it before you.... He would know.
I have quite a few Swede stripper clips.
I'll send you one.  if it is a 96 action the 96 stripper will fit the slot.
much like the 7mm stripper is for the 7mm guns (same as the 30-06/308 the us army uses as those are the ones we captured in Cuba)
and the 8mm is only for the 8mm and the 7mm is wider.
Zap me a PM and I will mail one out to you.

So is the bolt and handle made of stainlees steel? All of the Mausers seem to have that bright metal in common. Thanks Dale

It is not stainless steel.  It is simply polished steel in the white.  I would try any of the links to stock makers we have here on Graybeard and would also go to Boyds Stocks for a stock for a small ring Mauser.

The M93 and M95 Mausers originally chambered in 7x57mm are perfectly safe for the 6.5x57mm cartridge - they are all within the same pressure tolerances these actions were built for.  The M96 action begins the Swedish line of Mausers which ended with the short version (23.5" bbl and turned down bolt handle) M38 and you can find M96/38s in 7x57 and 8x57 Mauser as well.

Dale - I would rescope that baby and restock it.  It looks to wear a mil-spec barrel, so Sellier and Bellot 131 gn soft nose should give you better than acceptable accuracy and it is a serious game getter.  Do not bother with any US made 6.5 Swedish ammo, go for the euro made, it is much better.  Good Luck.

Well that pretty well nails it as a '93 Spanish action, probably with a Swedish military barrel installed. Too bad, the Swedish actions were of much beter quality.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
