.270 WSM Barrel
« on: October 15, 2003, 01:16:31 PM »
Can anyone tell me where i could get a .270 WSM barrel for my encore.  I would prefer to have a 26 incher.

I talked to Steve at VVCG several months ago and he told me they no longer make the WSM barrels for the Encore due to the issues stated above.

I do see however, their website still shows the 270WSM availability for the Encore.

Thanks.  I guess i assumed that since the encore could handle large calibers such as 7mm mag and 300 win mag that it would be able to handle the WSM line just fine.  I will consider a bolt gun now.

I was at VV the other day, and they told me the same thing.  It must be the pressure; you don't see many Encores chambered in other high-pressure calibers (like the Weatherbys) either.

I shot a pronghorn with my Model 70 in 270 WSM last year and the animal fell to the ground without so much as a twitch.  The recoil is not too bad, maybe just a hair more than an '06.

Coyote Sniper,
It is because the WSM;s are fatter than the 7mm and 300 Win Mag that makes it hard on the encore.   There just isn't enough meat left around the chamber after they cut it.  Also the encore does not lock up like a bolt does and relies more on case expansion causing the case to grip the chamber to help ease the pain on the frame.

I THINK.      Please let me know, anyone, if I am incorrect.

I got a 26" 270WSM from VVCG just before all the big debate started.  I think everyone pretty much agrees that factory stuff is too hot, but I've had no problems with my handloads.  I shoot 140 Partitions and 130 Sciroccos at just below max loads of Reloader 19 and group around .5"@100yds.  Personally, I love this setup and with a little common sense it should be just fine.  I voiced my concerns with Steve @ VV and he assured me that my loads would not be a problem.
As a side note,  there were 4 East TN whitetails last fall that DID have a problem with it as they hit the ground!

I'm not far, North end of Knoxville!  Just went to the range (Oak Ridge) yesterday for a final check of the rifles before we head out to Colorado Wed. morning.  Got Deer and Either-Sex Elk tags.  Hopefully, the 270 and 140 Partition will do the job.  It would be neat to get a bunch of us together, we'll have to work on that.

Fred at BULLBERRY says a man is a fool to chamber an Encore for any of the WSM calibers.
