2010 Montana Prairie Dog Shoot planning
« on: November 02, 2009, 09:46:31 AM »
Montana shooters, what do you think of planing for something like this for 2010 when they start popping them little iddy bitty heads out from a long winter.

I currently have my H&R Handi Rifle in 7mm-08 and H&R Sporter .22 WMR

But will probably either get another couple of barrels between now and then  ::)

243 Win
223 Rem
204 Ruger
17 HMR

I know in the H&R Handi Rifle area they get one going for 2010 hunt in Oklahoma and Texas I believe.  But that is too far for me to travel, and would like to just kinda stay within Montana for these little Prairie Dog towns that we have here.

What say you all?

I can barely schedule my next day, let alone a year from now (I.E. Double D's cannon and black powder shoots :-[), but it sounds great and if I can, I'd sure like to be there.

I am planning a trip to the east coast right now.  We are going to drag our travel trailer back there to see the grand kids, so I had better not plan on this. The wife would go ballistic!

But were it to occur in the time frame when we were returning from the great parking lot east of the Mississippi, "oh gee dear, what a coincidence there is a prairie dog hunt going just as we are going through there!"  She would never figure out I schemed on her...nope she never would! Nope!

Well we got lots of time to plan this, first I got to find some prairie dog towns and that of course will be after the snow melts.  I will have to take a Montana road trip, and make some house calls if the P Towns are on private property.  So we will see what happens between now and then.  No date planned yet, but I'm looking forward to adding some "Pooooof" to the world of P Dogs again.

We are probably looking at centeral to eastern side of Montana.

I will be doing some checking here soon, as to the best areas that we can hold this thing.

Is this being planned as an open to the GBO membership shoot like the ones held in OK or just you guys from the area or what?

Bill it will be open to anyone that wants to attend, as there never is a restriction.  This might be known as the Big Sky state, but we sure don't have our noses in the air about it  ;D

The whole reason for trying to get something together here in Montana, is that some of us like myself can not travel to OK, TX for the prairie dog shoots down there.  But we will be more than happy to have other GBO members show up, if I can find a good location and land owners that will not mind.

This is all still in the pre-planning stage still.

Back when we were in the pre-planning stages for the first GBO PD shoot a group of guys from MT were supposedly working on setting one up for the guys closer to that part of the country but it fell thru. Some of them did get together and go on their own I think but didn't invite anyone else was why I asked.

Wes stepped up and said he'd make one happen in OK and the rest is history. There have now been five but a sixth is seemingly unlikely tho not yet impossible.

Well I live in the NW part of Montana, and so I will have to travel to the areas that may be good places and check things out.  Right now, its all snow covered and dog are in their holes.  But I will get the feelers out, to see what I can come up with.

It will be nice if we can find a spot with a large enough dog town.

Some pretty bleak info being posted about Montana PD's over on Varmint Hunter Montana Prairie Dogs

Don't know how localized it is,  but something to check on.  Sure wouldn't want to run on to something like the blue tongue out break we found Antelope hunting.

Now I just need a good scope.....count me in...

Depending on where around Big Timber access/permission is going to be spotty at best.  This area is turning into trespass fees and outfitter/guide only.

I have a connection in Big Timber, and will be checking with them to see if we can get some accessable land.
