stevens 200 bolt damage.. need experience

Today my nephew shot my stevens 200 in 22-250 and apparently had a pretty high load. Primer was dimpled and blackened the end of the case. High recoil and now the ejector is not working and may have a piece missing. I have no idea what parts to get or where ther is a schematic to refer to and check out any damage. Bolt locks up great no other sign of damage . The ejector as is   can slide right out off the bolt face. the spring does not hold it in. I am not sure what holds it in normally. Can anyone help??? maybe a schematic link?

the best thing to do is send it back to savage for them to look at and repair.

I agree with rickyp...send it back to Savage for them to look at it. That is going to be your best bet.

Also, FWIW, read the user manual and you will find a schematic in there. If you don't have the user manual...

sounds like you're missing the ejector detent ball.

Turn the ejector upside down and notice the little dimple on it's bottom?

There's a tiny steel ball that fits between the extractor and the spring to hold things in place

The Extractor is held in place by the grooves in the bolt head along with the detent ball.

The Ejector is held in place by a pin.

Looked it over today and you guys had it right. the detent ball was missing. It fortunatley fell into the magazine. Actually got it out without losing it! That is now all set. Figured out the pin that holds the ejector and was able to knock it out but thats it. what looks like the ejector pin has been broken and I cannot get it out. The end of it is supposed to be round and what I see sub surface is flat and not moving at all..... Now what? Not sure on the bolt dissasembly. Looks like a allen on the back which is gonna need a vise I do not have. But is there any advantage to taking the bolt head off for my issue?   Thank you all for helping me out on this. I live on an island and it is a pain to run to the mainland whenever something comes up. If I can have something mailed in and fix it myself I like it!

No need to remove the bolt head to get the ejector pin out.  Use some solvent or light oil in the ejector pin hole then poke the pin a little to move it around, then smack the bolt head face down against a piece of wood to get it to drop out

update on the ejector'
Pulled the retainer pin out and finally got the ejector rod to move a bit then a bit more and after much exercising , got it to poke out the face enough to grab with the blade of a razor blade and pull it out. The force from the shell had slammed it back hard enough to burr up the top end of the notch which would not allow it to move freely. I filed it and now it work easily in and out BUT the spring is not very strong and it does not eject the shell enough to clear the gun. What kind of spring is in these things? the ejector pin takes up the depth of the bolt head. And can it be replaced?? At least now I can use the gun but it would be nice to have it work the way it should.

You should be able to replace it! Give Savage a call and see if they will send one to ya!

I know it may be tough for you but I still feel that you should give Savage a chance to check it over. From one rifleman to another! Everything may seem ok on the outside but it would really suck for you to injure yourself due to "saving time".

Either way...good luck in getting it going again!

Also...what caused this in the first place? Were you using reloads???

I had a similar problem shooting some hot reloads, only not quite as bad. The ones I shot just compresses the spring to the point it would not eject the shell.

My friends grandpa (who does all of his own gunsmithing) had some springs from Brownells that were the same diameter, so we cut it to length and installed it. It works like new. Unless you have something on hand like I did, I would just contact Savage and get a new spring.

Midway has everything you need and its fair priced. if it was a handload, i dont think savage will fix it

update on the cause so someone can learn from it.

I had another incident with this and this time I was shooting it. Long story now shorter, the problem was with 3 cases I had deprimed and had the shoulder pushed back a bit to much. This caused excessive head space and allowed the shell to 'slam' back causing the damage. The last casing had the rim pushed forward, the primer blown out and you can easily see where it impacted the ejector rod. I have since checked all my other reloads and found them to be right. Gun shoots as accurate as ever. I just need to replace the weak ejector spring. A bit of relief here as I was sure I was careful on the powder issue.

I just fixed the same problem, I knocked the pin out using a decapping pin for a punch and took it apart cleaned the hole, stretched the original spring then put it back together and now it ejects gently just like I want.
