Any magic to removing a front site....
« on: November 03, 2009, 04:52:38 AM »
...on a SW 29 that's pinned??  I removed the pin and can't budge the site, even with "gentle" persuasion from a brass mallet.  Is it epoxied????

Also...does anyone know where I can get a taller front site for the same gun...I'd like to shoot heavier bullets and they shoot 6+ inches high at 25yards, even with the rear site screwed all the way down.  SW has them listed, but, they are for the 460s abd 500s that have interchangeable front sites and not drilled or in the shape for them to be pinned.

They're just pressed in tight.  Turn the gun upside down put the blade in a vice and lift the gun off it, should come right out.  With that sight as a model, make another to whatever shape you want.  1/8" cold rolled steel works fine.

Doug:  Call S&W and get the proper height front sight for that revolver.  I had the same problem with mine and found the front sight too short.  S&W sent me the correct height front sight and a new sight pin, and all with instructions on how to get it out - instructions said something about a small drill bit, so I let the gunsmith handle it.

There was a significant difference in height size and I was a bit surprised at that but now my 300 gn loads print where I want them at 50 yds.  HTH.

Hi Mikey,

I did and they referred me to the parts section of the website.  Maybe it was just this guy...I'll try again tomorrow and let you know.  Thanks for the info!

S&W customer service ain't what it used to be. I was charged close to $200 to refinish a stainless revolver after they installed a new hammer pivot. This was a very early gun and the chrystalization of the pivot was evident.. Imagine $200 to polish one side of a revolver plus charging for a warrantee. No more lifetime guarantees from S&W..
