Butt Out tool..?
« on: November 04, 2009, 06:33:27 AM »
I'm gonna get laughed at, but I gotta know, has anybody used the Butt Out tool when field dressing your deer.

If you use it, does it aid you in removing colon by not having to split the pelvis?  If you use the tool as designed, how hard is it to remove the bladder from the inside once the colon has already been loosened.?

Saw it and it made me remember a hunt club that used to get new hunters to stick their finger in and cut around it . We just take a sharp knife and cut around the BH and pull it back thru from the inside no big deal . It also reminded me of a bull cinch .
I won't waste money on one .

Same here, I've always just cut around the anus and colon, then tie it off with twine and remove it with the rest of the gut.

Do a search, this has been discussed before. I reluctantly used one this year after watching my brother use one on a trip to NE last year. They work and are fast, but to each his own I guess.

It might be my age , the older i get the less i want to carry . At 20 it was gun or two, 50 shells or bullets 2-3 knives , para cord , food for several days , water , soft drink , etc , etc. Now one gun to hunt with and pocket gun that is always there, 6 reloads for revolver and maybe 5-6 for hunting gun , one knife , bottle of water and a snack . And cell phone to call sons to help drag deer out of woods !

I got you on that one, SHOOTALL. When I started bowhunting I used to sound like a gypsy caravan plowing through the woods, with crap hanging off me in every direction. My brother will be the one carrying the butt-out tool. Most of the hunting stuff in the stores today is designed to attract people not animals.

Let me ask you this.  After you use it for it's intended purpose and even though you've washed it all off do you really want it back?  Every time I saw that I'd be thinking of the time I crammed it somewhere the sun doesn't shine and I try to create a mental block about that part of gutting deer after everytime I've done it.  I know people that use them and swear by it, but they can keep their little butt tools to themselves.

Well when you stick your knife all around the little anus and then  slit the gut and catch a little dung on your blade do you throw that away too? All sounds too "I dont wanna get my hands dirty" to me. Tool or no tool you gotta just get in there and deal with it. We sometimes use a limb snipper to cut the pelvis and then just pull it all out!

I have seen them in action and they work well, but like was mentioned above it is another thing to carry. I carry a 4" fillet knife and either a serrated folder or a puuko anyway, the fillet knife goes around the bung slick as a whistle.

Butt out tool warning:
#1 You must not leave butt out tool with the gut pile. Why: Tool may become lodged in preditorial animals! Causing people to laugh as they run by with the tool sticking out the following year if you hunt in the same area!
#2 Butt out must be cut clean of the inners /Wiped off on oak leaves or pine needles and inserted in shirt pocket! Must also be kept in pocket while registering animal and going to the bar! Makes a nice conversation piece for the bar & attracts many good looking girls!

Its your call to buy one or not butt ! LOOKs like Just one more thing to carry! On the other hand I have watched a guy gut a deer with a knife and 2 tree branchs! He will never live that one down! Boy did I laugh!

I see your point about the blades, but for me I just don't see the butt tool as the same thing as a knife blade.  I'd just gather one less thing with me, because I carry enough other junk that I think I need and probably won't use.

I want to report that the Butt-Out tool works as described.  I shot this guy last Thursday and since I didn't get many responses,  I used it.  It worked perfectly.  I pulled out about a foot of intestine, tied it off and cut it.  However, what it didn't do was help me remove the bladder.  I ended up having to split the pelvis to get the bladder out anyway, which is what I was trying to avoid doing.
