US Springield Armory Model 1899
« on: November 04, 2009, 07:37:11 AM »
I have a US Springield Armory Model 1899 (serial number is 284994). There is a "60" stamped in the wood behind the trgger. 1901 is also stamped in the wood.  I received this from my Grandfather after he died.  Does anyone know the caliber?

Many Thanks,

Mark

Is it a rifle or pistol? I'm guessing is is a 30-40 Krag if a rifle.

Is it a bolt action with a magazine loaded from the side?

If you are posting pics I cannot see them on my blackberry, so I'm going off the info you have typed.

I believe Winchester still loads it. I use their brass to reload for one. It's a good cart. to load with lead bullets as it has a very long neck to hold them.

The Model 1899 was the last of the Krag rifles to be produced and was made between 1899 and 1902.  It was superceeded by the 1903 Springfield in 1903.  It shoots 30-40 Krag ammo and in good shape it will be a fine rifle.  It is also a very desirable collectors piece in original GI condition.
