Rem 405 gr. softpoints in 458 Win Mag
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:54:46 AM »
Any out there that have reloaded the 405 gr. Rem softpoints in the 458 win? I have reloaded the 458 using the Hornady 300 gr softpoint at low velocity and they are very accurate in my 458. So I was wondering if using the 405 gr. softpoint would also work at low velocities
in the 458? These rounds would be used for hogs!

No reason why not, just keep velocities under 2000.

I'm thinking a fair bit below 2000 fps depending on distance to target if used for hunting   ;)

I have fired them up to 1900 and found them to be a bit soft on heavy "bones". But lung shots they work just fine. With thru and thru penetrations. Personally I prefer the Speer 400SP, but many here love this bullet in the 45/70 at nearly these velocities.

My 458 winny loves this bullet.  I load it over a fairly stiff charge of 3031 and it shoots cloverleafs all day long.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

You should also try the Speer 350 grn. bullet in the .458!  It's constructed a bit more heavily than the 405's.  They cloverleaf in my CZ!

turning  you  458  into  a  45-70

makes  more  sense  and  safer  than

turning  your  45-70  into a  458

i  almost  just  got  the  458  and  skipped   the  45-70

Mine is in the Mark X, Whitworth model made in Manchester, England and is accurate!
And yes it is a versatile rifle if loaded right. Here in Colorado it can do quite well on elk,and moose.
When I first purchased the rifle it was going to mainly be for bears in Alaska or a safari in Africa. None of those hunts every came to be, seem like my job was always on high priority when I started to make arrangements for one of these trips.
Anyway I can still use it just to have the option of loading it for various types of game.
