Need Help w/sighting in H&R Handi-Rifle youth models
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:16:48 AM »
I have 3 new 243's w/ Nikon Prostaffs 3x9x40 on them.I have chased 40 bullets all over a target. I have cleaned bores, tried diff. mounts,re-tightened all screws, & chased 40 more bullets. I'm good @ zeroing in,that's not the problem. The only thing I haven't done is change scopes. These guns are driving me nuts(along w/the children they belong to).Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance,Steve

Have you checked the scope base to the barrel mounting screws to see if they are tight. Check all mounting . What kind of ammo are you useing? 26-t   ???    Welcome to the group!!

Been there, done that.

Were you benchresting them? If so, I'd be willing to bet that's your problem. Handi's are very sensitive to forearm pressure. Mine seem to be especially so and I might as well be shooting a shotgun if I rest it on the forward portion ovf the forearm.

I've found the best thing to do is rest my hand on the sand bag and hold the forearm BEHIND THE LUG.

The things remind me of a takedown 98 Mauser I built. You had to provide upward pressure to get any group at all.

What Pete said ,the forearm this very pickie on pressure . Try moving the bag back closer to the frame and see if that helps. It would be worth your time to check out the FAQ's they cover all the info on forearm trouble. 26-t ;)

Welcome! Start with the Handi Basics 101 Sticky, then go to the accurizing section of the FAQs and Help sticky, if you don't know how to load, shoot and care for a Handi to begin with, you're getting off on the wrong foot.  ;)

And since you're working with the 20" Superlight contour barrels, you're shooting yourself in the foot trying to get more than a couple shots close together if the barrel is warm, two shots from a cold barrel will be the best you can hope for unless you do some work on the forend, let the barrel cool well between strings or shots and you'll do well, the Superlights will test your patience.  :-\

What the guy's are saying about the forearm is really important. I did this simple fix found in the FAQ's and it turned my .223 into a tack driver. Just set that forearm screw really light, as in "Inch pounds" of torque. The advanced method is to bed the forearm, but then it's proritized to that barrel and frame.

The only thing I haven't done is change scopes.

My heart go's out to ya,,I put 60 rounds through my 7-08,,ready to beat my head against the wall,, when someone at the range said, "I'll bet it's the scope" ,,sure enough,,swapped it out with another and VIOLA' moa.! ;D

The super light .243 can really be a pain.  Good luck!

i have delt with the 243 barrels many times, and tim is right!!!
barrel temp is the most problem in just about every 243 barrel, even the bulls.
but not as fast to throw out...

i did an experiment with an infared gun, and found barrel temps 48 degrees above ambient
at 9" past the chamber, will affect poi vs poa... with the ultras, and super's

what you can do to hurry cooldown is to insert a brass or aluminum rod ( a cleaning jag rod) into the open chambered barrel and set it aside... the rod acts like a heat sink and will quicken cooldown up to
10-15 minutes, acording to your ambient temp....

these barrels are great shooters, once you get them on zero.... cold !!!!

if you hunt, thats your most important shot anyway (1st shot).... imho i don't think these barrels were made to use as a target shooter... at least i would not do it.

good luck with them !!!!

I found a cure. I'm gonna sell these suckers. Life is too short to have a gun like this. Changing scopes made little difference. Just when I think I'm close, it'll start slinging bullets. I have a 223 handi-rifle with the bull barrel that's a tack driver. They(children) can shoot it for a while.
I appreciate all the help anyway. I just don't have the patience to own these, nor do I trust them enough to take hunting. Thanks again, Steve

I sold my .243 Super Lite without even shooting it.  Too many bad reports.

Heh heh, I liked my first one so much I bought another, it's not the easiest to get a good three shot group, but 2 shots are fine for a 243 deer rifle, certainly wouldn't want to take one on a prairie dog hunt unless I had other rifles to shoot tho!  ;D
