Info on my Mauser Model 98

My father gave me my grandfather's Model 98 mauser today.  There are 3 markings on top of the receiver.  From top to bottom they are 135, byf, 44.  It has matching serial numbers and is in very good shape.

Does anyone have any info about his rifle?  All would be helpful...i know nothing about it.

Also, i got a box of federal 8mm mauser ammo.  Can I shoot this ammo in it?  Can I shoot hot ammo from sellier and bellot in it as well?

According to this thread...."Your rifle was made .... by Mauser at their Oberndorf pant. The eagle over 135 is a goverment acceptance marking, called a Waffenampt. It identifies the inspection team who oversaw production. 135 has been documented on Kar 98k rifles from Mauser Oberndorf fro 1941-1945."  
It is the third post down. I'm not sure of the year of production within that time frame '41 - '44.
It has possibly been re-barreled or chamber modified.  So I can't say about the 8mm Mauser ammo.

It sounds like a wartime bringback so it should be all matching and not have any import marks.....this adds to its collectability but of course you will never sell it anyway  :)

The federal ammo is american made and underpowered for that rifle. The S&B is 196gr loaded to full European potential that that rifle is designed for.

Take good care of it, cherish it, and shoot it. It's a fine collector item and a piece of WWII history as well as a piece of your family history.

Get online and do some research. You should be able to pinpoint production to within a few months with the serial number.

 Lucky man! If it is a complete S/N match very valueable! More so cause it came from a vet in the family. My father blessed me with two G98/40's! One is a battle field pickup he used to save his bacon in Italy- S/N matching!!  The other he picked up in Germany as a guard at a POW camp -mismatch bolt!!! ;D
