Any Opinions on Herter's Ammo????? Who Makes It???
« on: November 06, 2009, 12:47:02 PM »
Cabelas has Herter's brand ammunition, 7.62x39, .223, .380, .45acp, .40 in large quantities (500 or 1000 rounds).

Does anyone have experience Herter's ammo as far as how it functions, how clean it is, mis-feeds, mis-fires, problems, etc???

Does anyone know who actually manufactures Herter's ammo???

Thanks.

My guess would be it's imported from somewhere like Russia, China or who knows were else over there.

That's what I was thinking initially, but hoping maybe Remington or some USA manufacturer made it.

Thanks for the reply.

The company did go belly up but the name was bought by someone and they continue to put out products under that name. I'm not sure who owns the name these days.

Buying the name of a company like Herters, model perfect this and that, would seem questionable at best.

Back in the 60s I started my reloading with Herters products, but soon got over that problem.

I can still remember a set of 243 dies that looked like they had been reamed with a pipe tap.

The best thing about Herters was reading their catalog, kind of like reading very poor fiction.

Their writers and advertizers really did have good imagination, or maybe it was just a very small vocabulary.

Keep em coming!

Yeah back in the day, I'm pretty sure their brass was made by Norma. I suppose things have changed by now.

I've got some older .303Brit from them, also made in Sweden. I know it's Norma brass from the little bit of research I've done.
I thought the Norma connection died a long time ago and now the Herters name is applied to ammo from just about anywhere, like GB suggested-and each caliber could come from a different source.

I just saw one of their old catalogues - what a piece of work!  You're right about their imagination.  It looked to me like sometimes they were rebranding others' stuff.
