Here you have it!   A Cabelas box big enough to send a pair of boots in used to ship just 100 .30 cal bullets.

These people just don't get it.  I recently asked Cabelas why they don't have a catalog just for American made goods, and they replied "We shop world wide to get the best bargains for our customers".  Gimmie a break ~ Cabelas is NO discount house.

Well, it might be a whole lot cheaper to ship in that nondescript red, white, and blue US Postal Service bulk rate carton, but it won't have the neat "Cabela's" logo printed on the side....

Cabela's is generally pretty high priced place so I buy hardly anything from them.  I remember an Encore barrel I saw in their "bargain cave" priced about $100 over what I've paid for a number Encore barrels in a similar condition.  On the other hand, after calling 4 or 5 gun stores, it turned out that Cabela's had the best price on a CZ 550 Safari Magnum so the prices aren't always bad.

No.  In fact, I don't know that shipping on components is much different from anything else.  ??

I just bought 5 k of primers from Powder Valley. Their shipping was $9.45, about $4 cheaper that any of th other suppliers I have dealt with.
  I think most of them add a few bucks extra to their shipping. You take that few bucks extra on all buyers and it will make them a pretty nice profit.

I used to live within 15 miles of a Cabelas, so I could buy items off the internet and ship them for free to the store and only pay sales taxes over shipping which was always cheaper.  Then I have moved away and this past January 2009, Cabelas charges shipped and sale tax no matter from what ever state you are ordering from off the internet.  I don’t know how this is legal, so I have essentially stopped ordering from Cabelas unless a too good to be true deal comes around.

The internet is a great place for deals, and I don’t use any retail stores (Bass Pro, Cabelas, and Gander Mountain) anymore, since it’s cheaper off the auction sites for firearms, reloading supplies, scopes or what ever you want.

Yeppers Yooper, that's a big part of what turned me off of Cabela's. Only thing I could figure was that it had something to do with Cabela's having a store in the same state.

I generally only buy Cabelas goods with my Cabelas VISA points, and yes, I pay the card off monthly so they can't screw me on that, too.

Most of the mail order companies are so used to taking a real long mark up on the import goods that they would cry if they had to sell domestic goods at the traditional keystone mark up.   Then they try to tell us that they can't sell USA goods because they are too expensive. BS.    They are sooooo out of touch.

Yes, I use my Cabelas VISA points and pay it off in full monthly also and plus I purchase items that are clearance priced only.  I refused to pay retail for anything.  I stopped using the Cabelas VISA and use my USAA credit card that I pay off in full every month, but this one gives me cash back that I can use anywhere.

I did not pay any sales tax, until Cabelas built a store in my state. So, for that privilege, I have to now pay both shipping and tax. However, the tax is not Cabela's fault, since the state requires this of Cabelas (or any other catalog store with a presence in my state).

I quit buying from Cabelas last year when they changed there CC terms mid stream + if you shop around on the net you can find much better deals and some with free shipping.

For a lot of places, you not only pay shipping, but a handling (or picking) fee. They price the stuff as low as they can and still make a profit (some think their profit margin needs to be 20% or more). In the case of primers right now, they think they need a 200%+ profit margin. Then they add in the cost of one of their employees to "pick" the order off the shelf and get it ready to ship. I work in a packaging warehouse that deals in auto parts for the after market. We deal with the auto manufactures and when we quote a job it is all inclusive. To the retail warehouse they quote you a price and then try to tack on as many expenses as possible. Most times it is still more economical to order your parts rather than buy off the shelf. My local Gander Mountain is charging $4.99 for a hundred primers, over $22/hundred on bullets that normally cost $15 on the 'net, $20 for 22 mags that I can get for $14 on the 'net + sales tax at 7%. Those are just a few examples. Talk about a profit margin
