Has anyone shot a Handi barrel to the point that it totaly changes what load it likes ?

My 223 BB has had a Go-To load almost from day one , when I first got this rifle everyone said that BLC-2 was the MUST powder for the 223 Rem. and so I gave it a good try , using just about every bullet that I could lay my hands on , from the 35g , 40g , 50g and 55g V-max , 40g & 50g Noslers , 52g & 53g Sierra's , well you get the idea .

Heres my problem - sort of - last weekend I desided that it was due for a good cleaning , the round count on this barrel is well over 5k and its been around 2k since it had a major overhall . 3 solid nights of gun scrubber followed by about 50 passes with a brass brush each day .

Now to todays range trip , took 20 fouling rounds that were left over from testing 5 years ago ( never know when you'll need them  ;) ) they grouped much better than they ever did before , except the POI was way off though , no big deal .  However the loads with the 55g V-max and IMR 4895 that had become my GO-TO load shot like a shotgun .  >:(

The moral of this story is , the Fowling loads that did so good today were BLC-2 under a 50g Speer bullet , neither of which I could make hit the broadside of a barn before .  ???

What is so odd about this is that this barrel has always been a consistent 5/8" to 3/4" shooter with the 55g V-max load and it never changed till this last cleaning .  ???

Maybe you set it a little to close to that 22 mag,and it took up some bad habits. ;D ;D ;D.  Digger

And the Moral to this story is:
  Don't clean a barrel the shoots good
I have a regime of 5 passes with a patch soaked in Shooters choice, then dry patched 5 time for my Bench Rifles after a stage in a match. They shoot in the .250 and less (if the wind isn't blowing)As far as the hunting rifles go they are cleaned only after a bad weather hunting experience.I do keep the actions clean and oiled in the right places thou.
That old adage "if it aint broke don't fixit " works !!
 But look at all the rounds you will get to fire to get the barrel seasoned again,so it is a good thing after all.

Hey Rich, How many shots all together did you shoot in this session?
Your barrel may benefit from a light flitz polish, and a light coat of RemOil,  after that thorough cleaning... just a thought.

I didn't think you would fall victim to this from all the posts we have seen on GBO about major cleaning of rifles that shoot well. I think there is a little "Monk" in all of us that forces most into thinking there must be something wrong with the rifle if it shoots so well after so many shots and little to no cleaning, that we just "have" to do something about it.

If we shoot smokeless powder and jacketed bullets, why bother to clean the barrel on a hunting rifle if it shoots what you want as well as you want, regardless of the number of shots thru since the last big cleanup? I am a novice on this stuff, but the more posts I read on GBO about the hazards of cleaning a rifle that shoots well, I am convinced when I get my next rifle I will break in the barrel by simply shooting till the groups tighten up, and not clean the barrel in any significant way until it stops shooting well, period, regardless of the shot count.

Buy hey, you have a round it likes now, just take the lead and if the accuracy degrades, change back to your go-to loads and see if you get the accuracy back again.

I'm told that often the H&R's might take 100 rounds to really tighten up out of the box.  So I agree with Briannmilewis, once it starts shooting for you, leave it alone!  I think that is going to be what stimpy is going to have to do now, shoot one or two hundred rounds to work some jacket material back into those little imperfections that made it shoot in the first place.  Good luck stimpy, it will all come back, and you get to shoot it a lot.  It's a win/win.  44 Man
