Just sit back and think about anything the government runs. They cost WAY more than projected, run more inefficent than the private sector, and WHY would anyone trust the clowns in congress to get anything right.
Just to play devil's advocate here, earlier I mentioned the US Postal Service. That's a prime example of the government doing things well. The private sector still exists here to serve a niche market. If you want up to the minute tracking info then Fedex or UPS is there - or if you want next day delivery or need to handle an extremely large package.
However for your run of the mill everyday letters and packages USPS is typically cheaper, faster, and more efficient than the private sectors companies.
Lets not forget to that the military is ALSO a government run organization. That one is kinda obvious, but here's one that's not: fire stations at one time used to be a private sector market. You paid dues to a certain fire station and if your house caught on fire then they would come to put out the blaze. If you didn't subscribe then you weren't covered. Eventually it was noticed that such a thin was simply not feasible to be handled by the private sector and it become government run. And the government run fire houses worked much better. As a private pilot (just for recreation), I can say that a ton of the airports in the country are government owned - often by a local municipality. I've actually noticed that most of the government run airports tend to be handled as good or better than the privately ran ones. I'll admit (and have before) that I work for the county here where I'm at, and we own and operate the local airport here (though I'm not really involved with that area of operations). Our airport is regarded as being one of the cleanest and nicest in the area - with the lowest fuel prices to boot.
Government run services are here, and have been for a while. I'm not saying necessarily that health care definitely should be government ran - I'm just saying that it's an issue worth considering. Saying that it'll turn out bad because "everything the government touches does" is not really valid because we have examples to the contrary. It's an issue that has to be evaluated on it's own merits. Personally I think allowing the interstate competition and having a few more regulations would do the trick though.
You can't really blame people though. The private industry has been price gouging and mistreating customers for years. Once bitten, twice shy. A lot of people are hesitant to give them a second chance.
