Son's first buck
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:33:52 AM »
It has been a while since I have posted here, but well how could I not post this

The day started early pulled the boy out of bed at 3am, a couple of hiccups alone the way and we find ourselfs an hour or so late. Oddly for the spot where we got the buck it's not that much of a problem. We have close road access to above the feeding areas so it takes a while for the deer to get back up.

We are there maybe 30 seconds before we see a mulie doe, while we are waiting for her to get into range, this buck walks out at 150 broadside and calm. So I give the clearance to fire when ready when the gun barks the buck runs off but looking solidly hit. I gave it a follow up but as we found later I missed , but it did not need it as it piled up in about 50 yards, with the lungs turned into red jello. Almost got a shot off at the doe, but there was nothing but blue sky behind her when she looked back to see what had spooked her so I had to pass.

I got a small whitetail doe off that same hill that evening, but the rest of the hunt was lots of walking, saw plently but just not quite connecting, or the dreaded WSF (wrong side of the fence).

Congratulations to you and your son.  It's nice to see young hunters enjoying their time outdoors and he sure looks proud of his Buck.

Congrats on your hunt.  My 15 yr old son and I went out this last weekend and he got a nice white tail buck.  His second deer, got a mulie last year.  We both had a good time, but he did get tired of all the driving.  He wanted to go back to the same area the second day, we put over 500 miles on this weekend, going to one area, went to another area closer to our cabin, then back to the first area Sunday.  I don't think he can get off from his job again so this was it for him this year again.  DP

Give the boy a high five from me!  Great job....  I also admire your holding off and recognizing a not so safe shot.

Regarding Fusion ammo, I have had great experience with it in the 7mm-08.  My dad shoots a M77 compact (16" barrel) and he shot a 200+ lb white tail buck 2 years ago with the 140gr Fusions.  Straight on shot walking toward him at 200 yards on a field, one shot to the brisket and it was dead before it hit the ground....not even a twitch.  Fast forward one year and the same gun with the same ammo was in my then 12 year old sons hands, 140 lb doe broad side at 100 yards....boom one shot and dead before it hit the ground...not even a twitch.  I have not been able to find out what bullet they use in the Fusion ammo (I guess I haven't researched it too hard) but they work.

Good luck on your next trip out and enjoy the time with your boy, it's good for you, him and your future grand children....

Another young man becomes of age in the deer field.
That is the way it's suppose to be!
There is no better time spent than between a parent and their child out hunting together.
The memories are something that will last a life time.
Congrats to the lad and to you.
