Lower recoil load for 45/70
« on: November 09, 2009, 03:50:33 PM »
I have a 45/70 handi.  Looking for a lower recoil load using a 300gr jacketed HP.  I have loaded 60-61 grs of Imr 4198.........super stomper! Dropped down to around 55-56, still more than I want.  Anybody got a good hunting load (whitetail) thats fairly mild?  I do have some varget, and 1680.

Thanks

Try Varget it works great in a bunch of cartridges.

Hornady 6th Edition is showing a max charge of 48.7 grains of IMR 4198 with a 300 grain JHP for Marlin 1985 actions.  They don't even show a 300 grain for Ruger #1 actions, but they show a max of 53.3 grains of IMR 4198 with a 350 grain bullet.

If you want to stick with IMR 4198, keep backing that charge on down...like way down.

If you are looking for a lower recoil load for your .45-70 look no further than the loading manual of any bullet maker who makes 300 grain bullets for it. The way to get lower recoil is to have lower velocity. Each manual will have a wild variety of load data for their 300 grain bullets. Use a powder recommended by the manuals as delivering the lower velocities with it and you'll get lower recoil. Fact is tho the .45-70 in your handi rifle is gonna kick big time regardless.

Shoot for a velocity range of around 1400 fps and that's going to give you about the least recoil that will give reasonably effective performance from those bullets you wish to use. If you need still less recoil go with a 300 grain hard cast and drop the velocity down to around 1200 fps. Such data will be found in the CAS load data section.

Bobby, The Lyman 48th lists 31gr IMR4198 as a start load for the 300gr Nosler partition, 36gr max for their trapdoor data, velocity runs 1600-1700fps. Their Varget load starts at 47gr @ 1447fps, to 52.5gr @ 1617fps.

Varget is a good choice and there are also some 2400 loads that are nice.
