question on 209 primers

can anyone tell me if there are any differences in the different manufac. of 209 shotshell primers? I am using Winchesters now but a friend said CCI primers were "hotter" any truth to this? Thanks for the help!!!

I know there are standard, and magnum shotshell primers. But must confess that I'm not totally up to speed on all. I do know that in reading a independant study on shot primers, (when I got into trap), that Chedite produced the most even pressures, also useful for in-line blackpowder. So that is what I use, but havn't tested others.

I don't see an awful lot of difference accuracywise between different types of primers. What I have seen and think is far more important with the Encore is that those primers that are constucted with a steel cup will extract from the breech properly and those primers that are made with a copper cup won't. When you buy primers make sure that they look silver all over. If the base is made out of copper they will swell in the breechplug when you fire the gun, and when you open the breech the extactor will ride right up and over the soft rim of the primer. Now the primer will be captured underneath the extractor and you will need a tool in order to pry the primer out of the breechplug. The lesson to be learned here is when you purchase primers check them to see if they are all steel before you say "yes these will do". Good luck hunting

thanks for the info!!  so far, i've never had a miss-fire or a hung spent primer with the Winchester so I guess i'll stick with them THANKS AGAIN

Winchester primers are sealed so that the smaller ball powder doesn't get lodged inside the primer. When using ball powders you should always use a primer that is sealed on the "powder side" (flash-hole)

Federal 209 A are reported the hottest, CCI 209 (Not the 209M) are the coolest, the others fall inbetween. I shoot Winchester and CCI regulars with great success.
