Golf balls size steel balls-now available
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:53:15 AM »
If we were to arrange for golf ball diameter steel balls to made would you be interested in buying them for shooting in mortar or cannon?  Let's say we were able to get them for less than $2 each, hopefully much less, but $2 or less for discussion purposes, would you buy them?

How many would you buy?

Update, November 17th:

The offer Fox is making us just came in and here it is:

  • Carbon steel forged balls 42.8 mm (1.685 in.)
Smooth and round – tolerance +/- 0.001 mm
    $1.00 each + freight
approx 80 days to produce and have them in stock.

If you are interested and would purchase these balls and you haven't said so yet, please say so now and say how many you are interested in.  I need to give Fox some numbers to convince them to make these.

The poll needed a maybe choice as well as the yes and no choices. Golf balls run about 50 cents and lead balls are now about 5 dollars each so yes I'd buy some.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

I am trying to convince a company to make us steel balls.  If I tell them we maybe will buy, they will tell me they maybe will make them. So yes or no.

I'm good for a minimum of 100. Shipping could be a killer, though; especially for those of us on the west coast.

I would buy a few doz . and my GB Mortar won`t even be here untill Thursday .
They could make target shooting with the Mortar a little more interesting .
I had been looking for some lead rounds ...steel would be even better .

Carbon forged balls are cheaper than chrome. Which would you prefer.

For example a 1 1/2 carbon forged ball is $1, a chrome polished 1 1/4 ball is $1.25,

Joe we aren't looking for 1 1/4  balls, the example was to show the price difference between a carbon forged and a chrome ball.

We are working with a ball manufacturer to make us golf ball size steel ball and sell them to us in small quantities.

Well aware of King, they have an 1 inch iron ball that interests me.

I would go on the cheap with the carbon forged. That way I could buy more than if I was buying the chrome polished.

Kaintuck is that the diameter of your bore? If so you need a 2.194 diameter ball for proper windage.  You could probably use 55 or 56 mm
ball.

Some thing everyone needs to keep in  mind you will need to gauge these balls very carefully.  You will also need to very meticiously clean the bore after every shot.

If you stick one of these balls in you bore, you are in real trouble.  There is no easy way to get the ball out.

GB size, @ $2 or less, in steel, or carbon forged at $1 (+/-), I'll go for a couple dozen carbon forged...

Hard to believe that lead balls run $5 each. I think I'm rolling my own for less than $2 a piece.
I've got some "u" shaped plastic caps that measure 1.70 in diameter and are the same in height.
I'll try filling them w/concrete and use a sabot.

A doz chrome polished would be nice to have ...but for target shooting I would want carbon forged .
It would be great if the supplyer would have both ...I won`t be pickey if we could just get eaither ,.right now I`m stuck with white or yellow golf balls .
