Oops theis cam up at a page break.  I'll repeat is so it doesn't get  lost in the change
The offer Fox is making us just came in and here it is:

  • Carbon steel forged balls 42.8 mm (1.685 in.)
Smooth and round – tolerance +/- 0.001 mm
    $1.00 each + freight
approx 80 days to produce and have them in stock.

If you are interested and would purchase these balls and you haven't said so yet, please say so now and say how many you are interested in.  I need to give Fox some numbers to convince them to make these.

Spuddy, you both said yep, how many is yep?

At a dollar a piece, I am positive I want 100 and a cannon to go with my mortar, too.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Mike and I are still in for 100, and considering how much shooting we will have to do next spring and early summer to be able to come close to the results you smooth bore cannon shooters out there are getting, probably a 100 pc. re-order will necessary as well.

Well it looks like our little challenge to the steel ball maker worked out quite well.  Not only did he drop the separate callout for ball form, the roundness callout, which allowed egg shaped balls to the tune of .0167", but he also tightened up the size tolerance by a factor of ten.  Per Double D it is now +/- 0.001mm which translates to 1.685+/- .000039".  Plus or minus 39 millionths puts these ball squarely in the precision category AND dropping the separate callout for roundness means that General Rule #1 per ANSI Y14.5M 1994, 1982, or 1973 takes over and basically says if Size only is controlled, then form, ( a single cylindrical surface, a single spherical surface and an object between two parallel planes) is also controlled within the limits specified for size alone.

This is very good news for us as shooters, because a more perfect ball flies more truly to the bullseye!  There is absolutely no need to thank us; we were more than happy to challenge DD's stated info from the manufacturer, in a nice way, of course.  At this time we think a debt of gratitude is owed DD for the work he has done to develop this new source of target ammo.  Thanks DD!  And thanks to Gary for finding them initially.

Challenges to technology do not always work out very well as we learned in that old David Bowie song:

Ground control to Major Tom Ground control to Major Tom:
(First)         Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground control to Major Tom: Commencing countdown engine's on
Check ig-nition and may God's love be with you

                   Ground control to Major Tom:
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong.
(Final)          Can you hear me Major Tom?
Can you hear me Major Tom?
Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you ...

Here am I floating round my tin can, far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do

We do think that trying, trying, trying is worthwhile though, despite the risks.

Yes that is the tolerance given by Fox.

No don't order yet.  I will tell you when.

I  had an email from Ken this afternoon and he is satisfied that there is a demand.  He is going to proceed with the manufacture and they should be available in about 80 days.  He will let me know and I will let you know and you will order direct from Fox.

70 lbs in a 10$+ uspo box should be the cheapest way for small orders . How many balls in 70 lbs ?

where is our resident engineer ?  How many steel balls would fit in a 11"x8.5"x5.5" Priority Mail box ?

Roundness is not a linear measurment, it speaks to the Circularity of the object.

Yes.  In ANSI Y14.5M (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), roundness and circularity are two terms for the same thing.

How many steel balls would fit in a 11"x8.5"x5.5" Priority Mail box?

Are those the interior dimensions or exterior?

You can get at least 90 pieces in that box, maybe more.  Each ball will weigh about 11 ounces so that would be 990 ounces or about 62 pounds.  The postman's friend.  I doubt the box would survive without reinforcement.  Maybe that is the USPS's trick to keep people from shipping really heavy loads for the flat rate.

perhaps 3 layers of 30.

We get magnets shipped in boxes of about that size.

The boxes are lined with .050" steel.  Top and bottom plates, one piece wrapping the other 4 sides.  Thin, very strong.

Wooden crate around it would be better.

This from Ken this morining:

We generally use UPS or TNT we have an account and they come to us for pick up every day – no charge.
There is no domestic DHL anymore.
Fedex charges an additional $13.00 for each time they pick up.

Because of the weights involved – we have been using plastic pails (then the pails in boxes)
Just a cardboard box may open from weight, or get wet – balls are lost.
100 balls would be at least 70/lbs – a lot to put in their cardboard box.
Unless you mark fragile and pay for special handling – the boxes will get tossed around on conveyor belts, etc.
And if they are heavy – may get damaged.

100 balls – 70/lbs to 59427 by UPS is approx $65.00

Southpaw was just here. On the way over here Ernie stopped by a repair shop where they repair pumps for the Oil patch.  These pumps use a steel ball as check valve.  When the pumps are repaired the balls are changed out. These balls are all chrome plated. Ernie found out that a new 1 11/16" diameter ball to repair one of these pumps is $20.

Very interesting about the cost of that check valve ball, DD.  Part of the increased cost for that type is heat treating and part is the precision grinding, part is the more expensive material and part of the increase is the plating process.  Mike and I are very familiar with this type ball.

We and Cpt. Ed DO NOT want this type ball as it is unnecessary for our use.  Below is one of the carbon steel, un-plated, media balls purchased by Rocklock1 one year ago.  This ball was recovered from our high plains range north of Denver after being fired in sabot experiments in early December of 2008.  It was recovered by us approx. two months later, after we found it at 850 yards from the firing line.  The amount of rust, for this brief exposure, indicates a carbon steel ball rather than a moly, chrome or vanadium alloy ball, all of which are more expensive.  The rust also proves you are not paying for a chrome plating process.

Mike and I can't wait to get some of these, because, as many of you know, we love any excuse to go shooting!

At least a dozen for me...maybe more depending on shipping costs.

I got my breech/chamber plug shipped in a flat rate box. 6" dia x 6" long 4140. Postwoman made me come out to the truck and get it myself. ;D

I shoot greased-cotton patched, 1" hardened grinding media balls out my 1.1". I love shooting them...just watch for bouncebacks!

I told one of the other cannoneers at the Sunday Hernando Cannon shoot about the Fox Industries steel balls.

This gentleman  has one of Dom’s French 75’s in GB size. He indicated to me that he would be in for 200 carbon steel balls for his cannon when they are available.
