One question concerning steel balls - worst case scenario, how do you go about pulling one? Lead is easy enough to figure out, but I don't know where I'd get a carbide ball puller...

You have to do things before the ball gets stuck.

First you need to have a ball guage. Each ball you have should be gauged.

You also need to make sure you have proper windage.

After you fire the gun you need to properly swab and clean the bore before you load.

If you do stick a ball, the work begins.

One thing that is done is to use a CO₂ fire extinguisher down the vent to blow the load out. Having stuck a number of small lead balls and a one inch lead lead slug, I know none of it is easy.

If that doesn't work you are going to have find a way to neutralize the powder charge then drill and tap the ball and pull it out.

You'll be trickling powder down the vent . If its stuck halfway down ,you are .....stuck

BUT even with a 1.725" sabot you'd have to try to get one stuck ...... If you been shooting for some time without swabbing and drying between shots and you dont notice them getting tighter and STILL not clean it ?

Then I'd ask him ....' So what are your plans for getting rid of it ? I can haul it to the junkyard for disposal if you like ?'

Most likly you ram a ball home and realize you had no charge in first . It should just slide out when tilled down .

If you swab between shots with 42.8mm ball in a Dom made gun . YOUR BALLS will NOT get stuck !

....In your cannon .

Without a sabot you'd have to be a minor version of Elmo to get it stuck .......

Oh are you guys in for a thrill!

I was up at Southpaws this afternoon picking up an old desk and chair. The desk is to become my new photo table.

While there Ernie showed me a steel check valve ball he found while cleaning up his shop. He said it was about golf ball size and fit the golf ball mortar. !!!!!! It does?! Where's the powder? Where's the fuse?!

Let me tell you guys, shooting golf bal size steel balls is not the same as shooting sporting goods! We were filling the powder chamber to the top which is 24 grains in this gun. The ball was going 85 to 90 yards by boot top measuring. When the gun fires it does not make a wine cork pop, but goes bang. The mortar recoils on the snow about a foot. The ball comes out and flies in the slo-mo mortar ball arc and bounces off the frozen ground. We weren't real careful with windage and the 4 shots covered an arc of about 15 feet. If we were more careful about windage and eliminate the right to left dispersal the down range differential was about 5 feet.

I don't have a Golf ball mortar and wasn't going to order any golf ball size steel balls. Change of plans!!!

Yesterday when I talked with Ken Macer at Fox he told me that he has about 2000 lbs of balls coming in for us. Spread the word!

How about a magnet? I have one that just fits the bore and has a hole for a brass screw in the bend to attach it to my rod. Cleaner than a fire extinguisher and safer than powder.

I have pictures of this afternoons shoot but .... I lost (in one of my upgrades) the simple crop and resize feature the old Windows Picture and Fax viewer had. I think it went missing when I upgraded the windows explorer to the version 7 ?
The new system has no tool bar to crop picture . Just the resize feature . I have been hunting high and low for the old program with little luck .
I hate progress

I still just use PAINT. To crop, I copy a section that I want and paste it into a new file. Low tech is OK. Maybe not fast, but OK.

You might consider looking at a program named "IrfanView". It is free to download, allows you to drag a box with adjustable sides, then crop. It has a resize/resample function that you pick the size in inches or pixels and it will resize it for you, either bigger or smaller. The program is very simple to operate, will allow you to change brightnes, color, and contrast, and it will read just about any graphic/video type on earth. It has, however, very basic drawing capabilities so is better for viewing and manipulating a graphic file than drawing on it.

Here's your answer George:

Hi Doug,

The balls are what we call “soft” in grinding terms. They are not through hardened.

You should be able to mark them.

More like some kind of code word that would identify to ball as mine to me but not be easily traceable to me for someone without the clue. Like my birth year or some other relatively unique thing of not too many characters.

It does make sense to mark your balls, especially if you're going to be shooting around other people with balls of steel. Wouldn't want to mistakenly handle anyone else's balls!

For realism, you could stamp in a "fuse plug."

Or chisel out a set of notches for tongs.

Or, you could stamp in a whole bunch of dimples and paint them white!
