How picky are you going to be pulling the trigger or passing deer this year?  Last year I got a nice solid 8pt buck and I think I was very lucky to get that deer.  This deer I don't expect to have the same kind of luck twice I'll probably just look for anything brown.  I hunt on a farmers land who is a friend of the family and he wants the deer gone.  Wouldn't be too good of me to let them walk in this case.

I shoot any legal deer.

Teddy,
I am going to be very selective myself.  I can't really afford taxidermy this year, so I will only shoot a Monster Buck if one comes along.  A doe will fill my freezer and I will take one if time allows after a few days of unsuccessful buck hunting.
Then again, after some thought, I can always do a European mount myself.  We'll see.  :-\

Last year I got an antler mount done for the buck I got and it only cost my about $80 with tip.  The guy did a great job on the mount and wrote all the scoring information on the back of the board.  It was so close in size to the other one I have mounted I didn't see the point of getting two almost exactly the same.

This year, I really want the meat, antlers will be a bonus if they are seen.

That's a great idea!  Like I said before, we'll see what happens. At least now I have another option for mounting. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I will probably only shoot if the goddess of the hunt smiles on me during ML season opener week.  Being an out-of-stater any more, I am limited somewhat.  I hunt with a group that is composed of individuals that are not necessarily wound right    ::), so meat or antlers is always a bonus.  The big thing is the fellowship and good times in the old cabin eating too much, playing cards too late, and sleeping in too long in the mornings.  Ah-h-h-h...sometimes, my kind of hunting!   ;)

We are in it for the meat. If we get antlers its a plus. Back where we hunt antlers don't come along all that often.  The country side out here is covered with hunters. So we just take what the good Lord offers. If we don't get any meat, I will be disappointed but that would be a real rare occasion.

Last year we put meat in the freezer( still have a little 5 lbs or so) and i was blessed with the one in my avatar ;)

I will let small bucks go, all antlerless deer and LARGE bucks get a 100 grain 6.8mm in the vitals.

The economy the way it is,  I'd just as soon fill the freezer legally, before I have to compromise my ethics.

Lonny

Hate to have to feed my family and result to poaching to do it.

Hence, I think I'll not concern myself with antlers, and moreso with meat this year.

I may be overly cautious, but it's one less thing to concern myself about if I have a half dozen butchered cervids in the freezer.

I had too much coffee when I wrote it  :D

And if opening day was any indication, my family would go hungry if they were depending on me....

OK, I don't want to jack the thread, but  I went with my son and put him in a ground blind about 100 yards from a fenceline in open hardwoods.  The other side of the fence is a back pasture.  The area normally gets good deer traffic without "artificial attractants"

After we sat till 10, I got up and moved towards him and had him meet me by the fence, to check for tracks and sign.

When he got down there, he said he didn't see anything.

To which I asked him to 'splain the heaping steaming pile of deer dung at you're feet"   ::)

Kids.

It's OK.  It's a new area for him, and he's a rookie.  But he done used his mulligan for the season.

Ditto

I know I said this earlier....but since I already got a 8 point with my X-bow I decided to pass on 2 spikes, a fork horn and a 4 point on opening day.  So I guess I'm more selective than I thought  :D

I'm not in Indiana and I might not even get around to hunting this season but if I do it will most likely be a "if it's brown it's down" year for me. I'd really like to give my R700 LSS .257 Whby Mag. a try with both Barnes 115 TSX and Nosler PTs. Both are shooting right at half inch groups at 100 yards from the rifle. I have no doubt how the Nosler PT will perform but would like to see how the Barnes does as this is the first rifle I've ever owned that shot them accurately enough to take hunting with me.

I have an old H&R .30-30 that belonged to my best friend Bill Doss before he died and I'd like to bloody it on deer in his memory as he never got to take it hunting before he died. And I'd kinda like to see how my NEF Wayne York .25-20 will do on a deer since it's not legal for small game here. Hey it's what took down the Jordan buck that held the World's Record for longer than perhaps any other head ever has or will hold a world record.

Bill, Sorry to hear about your friend. Better take that 30-30 out and shoot a deer for him.
I know a guy that has a 257 W.M. Those things are deadly. Good Luck!  Mike

I would love to have a .257 and shoot those 87 grainers at some coyotes! I try not to get all wrapped up in antler size. Not to say that I don't want to shoot one. But if it happens it happens.

I always start going out to my spot several days, to a week "before" the opening day.  I just go out to see what is coming through, and to size up what kind of season it will be.  This year i decided that, because most of the corn was still standing, and the weather extra warm, that waiting for a bigger buck would be a mistake.  So, i shot the first decent body sized buck to come through, and that ended up being a nice 4 point.

Then, day after day, does and spikes worked there way by my stand,

Many days, turkeys also came through,

And some of the deer came VERY close,

But, not one bigger buck came through, so i'm glad i made the decision to put that 4 point in the freezer!

Here in my part of Ga. the bucks must have at least 4 pts. on one side to be legal.  Lots better at least than the 15" rule they once used.  (I always had trouble getting them to be still while I measured).  Personally, unless its a record book buck, I'll pass him over for a doe.

 I changed my mind!

I am not picky about the looks of a deer, I am going to eat.

I am going to be picky about the recipe I use to cook up the coyotes though. Appears we have more of them than deer ;)
