Compared to what?  Do you mean they look cheaper, or appear to have cost cutting done like a lot of rifle makers are doing?

Ok I was waiting to see if anyone else had seen any, A friend owns a gun shop and ordered a new 336 30-30 for a guy, got it in and the guy refused it, Metal finish was not buffed out, Stock I don't know what kind of wood it is, around metal and butt plate look like it was air brushed with black paint! Have seen three just like it not up to par with what Marlin used to produce.

Was it a 336W?  Everything I'm seeing has fantastic looking walnut on it and the metal looks great.

They have a beech stock and they aren't very attractive.  The metal finish appears to be ok like all Marlins.

I sure would not buy one sight unseen.  About half the ones I see on the shelves have nasty looking wood and the wood to metal finish leaves a lot to be desired.  This appears to be across the board from what I have seen, 1894, 1895, 336.

They must sell different Marlins in other parts of the country.  I think you're seeing Rossis they do look like crap.

Swampman

You are probably right, I must just be an idiot and do not know one brand of gun from another.  Then again maybe I live in idoitville and Marlin just sends their ruff looking guns here hoping we do not notice. ;D

Have to go now and get my Marlin 1894FG out to go hunting with in the morning.  Or is that a Rossi.  Maybe I will just take the Winchester. :-\

Well I'll be gloating over my curly walnut stocks.  Just bought a new 1895 with awesome walnut.

Maybe they were hoping to slip a bit on the quality control as they don't have a lot of competition these days in the lever action world?

Marlin has long had low cost options with less spec wood and metal finish.  I have one that is a great shooter, and I wouldn't trade it for one of the fancy ones.

None that I'm aware of.  Everything else is junk.

Swampman, I don't know what a 336w is ethier...

I saw a guy at the range yesterday that had a new Marlin 336W 30-30. The serial # was lazer engraved on the right side plate, and the wood was less than average. The number was 91........, and I agree, it wasn't a very nice looking 336. I was sighting in some 336's that I gotten over the last year but not shot yet, he came over to my lane and was asking me questions about his new 336W. I had never seen the numbers on the side like that. It looked kinda cheesy.
I heard that Gander Mt. had them on sale for $300. I have a feeling it was one of those.
When did Marlin start engraving the SN's on the side plate?

Marlin has two grades of wood, one is eastern hardwood stained walnut and the other one is black walnut. If you look at a gun catalog you can see the differnce in discription and also the price differnnce. The walnut ones are much nicer and better checkerin where as the stained hardwood look very cheap as has been stated. I think all of the 1895's have the black walnut stocks unless you opt for the stainless steel with laminated wood.

Was told many years ago by a friend with a gun shop, gun company's have different levels for different distributers. Like the 10/22's at the box stores were thrown together as cheap as they could. And the one's going to regular distributers that wholesale to gun shops, were put together with better care and wood. Makes sense, but I really don't know if it's true or not.  gypsyman

It's not true.  Gun shop owners always say that.

Marlin made the Glenfield series that was down specified for the mass market, and also the 30 AW which lacked finish and sold for less.  Guns with the same model number are made to the same specs though.

And having owned several Glenfields I've found them to be more accurate than my Marlins.  Glenfields were sold in gun shops too.

They are perfect for hunting.  You don't have to worry about hurting that pretty gun. and internally they are made just like their ore expensive brothers with the bullseye on the stock.

The walnut versions of the 336, 1894, and 1895 that I've looked at lately have been very nice looking guns.

IMO, perhaps a little above average from what they were in the past.

If I can buy a 336W with a cheap scope for $349 or less at Dick's, that is mechanically identical to another 336 model that costs $100+ more, function will always win out over looks with me, if there is a big price difference.

If there is minimal difference, I will pay a little extra to get the looks as well, but not $100.

I wish they would sell 336s in synthetics so you wouldn't have to worry about what is happening to your wood.

The 336W is not limited to department and big box stores.  Gun shops sell them too.

I have noticed that Marlins are rough compared to how they used to make them I had a old Glenfeild that was a very nice finished rifle even the Mod 39 is not as nice as the old ones, glad I have a old one!
Now that Remington or who ever owns them expect more junk! Look at how the 700 Rem is made now and look at one that is 20 years old. Good thing is you can buy a Tika for a tiny bit more than a 700 and not worry about recalls on the gun how many recalls in the last 10 years on Remington guns?
Okay my rant is over :)

Remington will only make them better.  I've never seen a poorly finished or inacurate Remington.  They are the best production rifles you can buy period.
