Romancing the .22
« on: November 12, 2009, 10:58:45 AM »
Have you had a chapter in your adult life when the only single projectile firearms that were really interesting were .22s? I'm going through it myself right now. Not sure of the reason. But it's FUN!

The one and only .22 that can be simply referred to as .22, of course. Everything else has to get qualified with its full name.

I started going through it again with the .22lr about a year ago when my youngest daughter showed a distinct interest in guns and shooting. We got her a Crickett Rifle and when I was testing it, I got hooked on .22s all over again. Since then, I've purchased a few more .22s. I can't seem to get enough of shooting the official NRA A-23/5 targets at 50 Yards with my iron sighted CZ Lux. I'm almost ready to start competing in an on-line monthly tournament that's held over at Rimfire Central, but man those guys are good, so I need to practice, practice, practice. So, that's my current romance with the .22lr.

I think it's near and dear to most shooters, cause that's what alot of us started on. I find myself shooting it alot, mainly when i get aggravated working up loads.

I have for years carried a 357 mag rifle with light loads for small game, and before that a 3030 loaded with cast light loads for the same purpose.
THEN! About two months ago I remember I had to very accurate 22 rifles, and one very accurate, and light to carry Browning Buckmark 22 with a 6" heavy barrel that shoots like a rifle.
How did I get away from them? I started with them. I have started carrying them to the woods, and using them for what they were intended. SMALL GAME, and they are easy on the pocket book, and ears.

Oh my gosh! I've got to go shooting now.

Skunk: My 22 rifle is the CZ Lux. Awesome rifle. I've had it for several years. We had the youth version of that gun for the kids until they outgrew it.

Dee: I used to shoot a .38 special version of the Winchester 66, a copy made by a South American company. It was just beautiful, and was a great squirrel rifle. It just invited itself along everywhere.

Mostly, I shoot handgun .22 though. My favorite fun gun is the Smith and Wesson 617 with iron sights, a revolver.

I have a Smith 22A that's 4 or 5 years old that has gone through in excess of 30,000 rounds and this is only one of the 22s I own.  If that tells you anything.  I've been known to sit on the back porch and shoot for hours at a time.  How you guys who live in town or in subdivisions survive I'll never understand.

I have a Remington Nylon 66 that sees use every week.  Either I or my son is taking it out when we leave the house.  It has taken more Rabbits, Grouse, Ptarmigan, and Foxes, than anything else I own.  I have never had to get back into it since I never got out of it.

That 66 has become quite a classic. I remember drooling over the ads in the Remington catalog when I was a kid. The 5mm Remington was advertised in the same catalogs. I always wished I had one of those 5mm's.

I hear you on the Lux being awesome. Fortunately, mine loves the cheap ammo too. I also have a 452 American and a 452 Varmint. Both are just like the Lux - awesome. In addition, we have a 452 Scout for the daughter, but she is just a little too short in the arms yet to hold it properly. But its there for her when she's ready.

Questor;   That Chapter was started in my youth as a member of the high school .22 rifle team.   We took State Championship two years in a row using Remington Target Rifles.  Now I reminisce those days with my CZ Lux.   The guy on the right is me.

Actually slim, I have owned two. The first one I took out a few times, and shot it, and thought WOW! This thing shoots like a rifle (accurate), and then for some reason it found it's way to the gun safe for several years, and ended up getting traded.
A few weeks after the trade, I thought: Why did you do that? So a few years ago I went and bought another, and it ain't goin anywhere. It pretty much is in the Jeep all the time when I leave, and although I am a hugh fan of the 3030, my Model 92 in 357 mag is it's partner in the Jeep. Folks are moving into this area from Dallas and the 357 mag doesn't shoot as far, and like my Browning, both are quieter.

its been a life long affair with me. it started with a model 62 winchester handed to me by an aunt that was old as the hills and tough as a boot. she handed me that rifle said it was bought by her new way back when. i was 8 years maybe 9 years old and with the rifle she gave me a box of shells and sent me off into the old pecan orchard with instructions to bring home some meat. the huge old trees with the squirrles running everywhere and i must have shot all the shells and brought home 10 squirrles all cats...she was the first person to show me how to skin them and dress them out. she then showed me how to cook them for supper..then breakfast then dinner the next day. since that day i have owned many many .22 pistols and rifles. i have given all mine to my kids and have kept that pump my aunt gave me and use it still today. when i am dead and gone i will give it to my oldest son and hope it brings him the many many days of pleasure and memories that that gun has brought me.

it is a fun gun a cheap shooter and has for me killed many animals including hogs and deer and has taken me on some of the best hunts of my life.

Yep the romance with the Winchester 62 goes away back with me to Red.   My uncle kept that beautiful .22 pump behind the door on his back porch.   He bought it in 1934.  I never touched it, but was facinated by it.   As a young man, I traded an old springfield 234 bolt action in for a ROSSI  62SA reproduction of that Win 62 pump which I still have.

I shot at a range like that when I was a kid. Still remember those hand crank pulleys in the picture, pulling the targets to and from the back stop.    :)

Ahhhhhhh.....the Remington Nylon 66. My dad received one as a gift when he graduated from the Texas Highway Patrol Academy from my grandfather decades ago. I have hunted with that rifle for years and years. It has taken rabbits in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Great memories!!
