Yes.
I used to think the 257 Wby was a hot rod wood chuck gun,
one of my friends used it on a deer and it was great.
another friend swears by his for elk.
Both use 120 grain bullets.
What they like is the laser like ballistics and the lack of though in the shot.
With the rifles sighted in to 200 yards it is Aim and shoot.

You asked so I'll answer  ;) Will it kill that buck? .. yep. Would I kill that Buck? Hmmm need to see better photos or look him over personally  ;)

Would I use a Weatherby to kill that Buck?............. never as I wouldn't have one as a gift  :-* I think they're over-rated, over priced and not even that nice. Oh yep I have shot a few and have only found one that I actually thought looked decent and actually felt OK. Cannot recall the model now as I took that little notice it was a 270 but I don't even know now if it was a 270 WM or a 270 Win that's how little notice I took. Sorry but I really don't like them.

Asked as a joke I would guess, the 257Wea. is about as deadly as you can get for Deer!!!  :)

Hmmm depends if I needed to pee or not  ;)  Now I was answering a question and wrote as I feel. It don't make it right or wrong it's just my opinion. Now Trucks and SUV's hmmm I drive a Jeep Cherokee (93) it don't make it the best it's what we could afford and what was available at the time of looking. It takes us and what we want from A to B and tows a trailer should that be needed, Ok the fuel consumption could be better  ::) but if we're honest despite the 4.0L ilump it does not use much if any more than a landie would.

Back to the Weatherby's I really do feel that ole Roy was one heck of a salesman, he sold his ideal no matter how right/wrong it was, but I don't see the need for the hype that's attached to them nor the need for them at all for me anyway. They don't do anything really that cannot be covered by the 270 win, .308, 30-06, 8x57mm or .458 Win Mag. If I wanted a .25 cal it would be a .257 Roberts probably an AI version and in fact I very nearly had one built a few years ago.

Now a question of my own  ;) Do Weatherby actually make anything themselves?

hile I do not like Roy's idea of having a great looking trophy but the meat inside being Jelly.  He pushed the standard bullet designs to the speed barrier where there is the fine line of having the bullet fail due to speed.
the 257 Wby mag with heavy for caliber bullets,
it acts much like a 6.5X55 Swede with out the bullet drop.   I was not a fan till Chad shot his mule deer with it and used to make fun of it as a super wood chuck gun.
While I am not a fan of the 1/4 bores, I think I would go with a 6.5X55 over any of the .257's, but I do respect the rounds.  And if I were to build a Bean feild rifle for deer in NC where 1,000 yard shots are possible it would be a toss up between the 257 Wby, 264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem, or 300 Wby as a round.
There is nothing that these rounds, the 300 Wby in particular, will do that my 308 or 06 will not do.  Other than sighted in at 200 yards they take a little more out of the guess work at bullet drop at longer ranges.
And while the Wby Vanguard is a Howa 1500 the Mark V action is made for Wby and is a nice smooth action.
and many 257 Wby chambered rifles were 98's or other standard actions built up.

You missed my point on the truck.
there is nothing wrong with a jeep Cherokee I have owned two.  I take that back there is nothing wrong with a leaking jeep.  the only problem comes when it stops leaking.   ;D

Brit, I see no need in blasting brand choices, especially when you consider that fatercat was not asking what ANY of us thought of a Wea. rifle or one of any other brand for that matter. I see no reason for your response other than to inflame, start arguments.

Brit, you say you don't think it's worth the money, but I bought a Vanguard 257 W for $400.00.  I've owned Howa 1500's and S&W 1500's and know the Vanguard is the same basic thing.  I have yet to have anything go wrong with any of them and the 7 Mag Howa was the most accurate gun in that caliber I have ever shot.  They are a bit heavy but I have found them well built and as accurate as any brand, great, good and some not so good.  I have spent more on guns that didn't fit me as well, so I didn't use them or like them as well.  I don't look down on inexpensive guns, as I own alot of them and have some that are not real cheap.  If they are reasonably accurate and reliable and fit me right, I like them.  Now please don't knock my cheap H&R single shots, my Rossi levers or the Vanguard. :-*  DP

Hmmm perhaps I should have been more specific  ;) when most folks think about Weatherby rifles, they tend to think of the flashy MkV's, now I doubt even many Americcan die hard Weatherby MkV fans would pay the prices that that are chanrged for them here in the UK. Heck a Remington 700 PSS costs about $1300 here and that is from a place known for it's low prices  :o.  Hmmm I tried looking through Gunmart to find a Weatherby price and could not find one advertised   ::) yep they're that popular here.

We see a few re-badged Howa AKA the Vanguards. Now your's feels right to you   :) I'm glad as a rifle that feels good is half the battle. of those that I have shot none of them felt good to ME and for the same price of less I can buy Mannlicher, Blaser, Sako, Sauer and may be even a hand built RPA  :o. Now as I don't like the Sako 75 & 85 I would not buy one of those and the same goes for the Sauer 202. The Blaser R93 is one heck of a rifle and knocks any Weatherby I have ever seen or felt into a cocked hat  ;). Again it's personal feelings and opinions. Most of my rifles are of a certain age and in fact I have just sold my most modern rifle (a Mauser M96 Slide Bolt in 6.5x55)  to make room for a 1956 vintage BSA Hunter in 222 Rem  ;D.

BH, still, nothing to do with the original post. I have opinions too, but no one should care.

Back to the subject, fatercat that is a nice buck & should be a dandy next year if you are in an area where he has a chance for survival.

Your Weatherby...MIGHT BE....just a little much for that deer AT THAT RANGE, but then again a case can be made for YAAAAWWNN a 270, 30/06, 8X57, heck even the 458 at that range. Love the 257 weatherby, even though I don't own one (yet ???) I do shoot a 257 Rob AI though and love it. Someday I do want a 257 Weatherby, probably go with the Vangaurd @$400.00. But a case can be made for Remingtons 700, to bad that one isn't 400 bucks.  :P
As far as taking "that buck". In my neck of the woods, if I want that buck, I shoot that buck, I can't wait for next year as it's Highly likley it won't be there.
O.K. I'm apologizing in advance, but I just have to add:

Wow! :o How did you know that? personal friend of yours? or are you just repeating what those before you have printed and just repeating without any personal experience in the matter. Who really cares anyway. If not Roy Weatherby, then who? Can't  really rewrite firearms history, now can we? The guy made it to the mainstream with his wildcats, nothing wrong with that. CRASH87

If you want to use that .257 then great - but don't use varmint bullets (100 grains or less) unless he is quite a bit further away.  ;)   It is tough to beat the 120 Hornady in the .257 WBY as an all-around game bullet, but I'd still want any edible target to be at least 100 yards away.

BTW the worst bloodshot deer I ever harvested was with a .300 Savage and a single 180-grain BTip in the shoulder.  Go figure.

That deer needs a couple of years to grow up. I'll shoot deer with any rifle I happen to have when needed that is powerful enough and sighted in. The only Weatherby I ever owned was a Mark V in 270 Weatherby with a truly blonde stock. Barrel lasted 1200 shots and it was  accurate enough but never a tackdriver. I rebarreled it to 7MM RM and it really was a shooter then.

Whether to shoot or not to shoot depends on what state your from(length of deer season)and what your neighbors management program is. Unless you have alot of control, I say bird in hand is better. The 257 WeBee is damn fine. With a good 100 gr plus bullet, that deer is toast almost as far as you can see him. When in doubt whup it out!
