200 gr. Barnes TSX in .358 Win
« on: November 13, 2009, 02:54:09 PM »
Has anyone used the Barnes 200 grain TSX in the .358 Winchester?

Just curious.  Seems like a very good idea.  Light for caliber bullets work well with the Barnes X configuration.

Can not see why not as the 200 Gr. Hornady goes the job.

Which job?   The Hornady and Barnes TSX are different bullets, even though they're the same weight and diameter.  Conceivably the all copper Barnes TSX would be more suitable for larger animals than the lead core Hornady.

The barnesTSX should open up as well as well as the lead core bullets on large game such as moose and deer with in range where there is enough engery left to kill the intended game .
The bullet will quickly open up with pedals then retain the rear section causing massive internal damage to the vitals if so hit .

Would the 358W kill a deer any better with the barnes 200 Gr. than say the 225 Serria game king  @ 100 yards ? Ask the dead Deer .At the speed the bullets are starting off , I would think all that is really required is a good cup  core bullet.
Hunters have done this for many many years .
The 338 Federal which compares to the 358 in a way , maybe out the gate a bit faster and shoots a bit flatter with the same weight bullet, too is well suited to cup and core bullets . That is of course commonknowlege , your not going to shoot a Griz @ 300 yards normally  and kill it .

If it makes you happy to shoot a Barnes, do so. The Hdy SP's or Speer FN's will also work on any size game you would hunt with that cartridge.

The other posters have given good common sense advice. I personally use the 35-cal 220 gr Speer bullet for deer (which to-date has been the largest animal I've hunted). However, others have their favorites and for their own good reasons. I have begun to reload the 200 TSX to see what accuracy I can achieve with this bullet. I have no doubt it will be an effective deer bullet. With the much higher cost of the Barnes versus the Speer bullets, I am mainly trying them out so I have an all-copper game bullet to use, if the cup and core bullets ever get outlawed in my area. Unfortunately, California seems to set the standard for this sort of silliness but it never hurts to be prepared just in case. For the present, Barnes is the only such company of which I'm aware making 35-cal all-copper bullets.

Now your telling us a bit more information and the reason for your question . You might have recieved a different response .
As far as I know Barnes is the only 35 Cal bullet but maybe there are more .Guess you could punch in every one that makes bullets on the Web to see.
I see Hornady and Winchester are loading the 338 cal, so those of us with the 338 Federal are covered .
Americans overal do not favour the 35 cal , so there is not a great demand for the bullets . Maybe oversea's you might find a better section .
Should this No Lead ban expand , there will be a greater demand for all copper / Guiding metal bullets , then too there will be more companys on the band wagon.

If you have started to reload the 35 cal barnes then share your findings , and others might then also respond with their experiance and expertise

I have a 35 Whelen.  From what I have read and seen, the Barnes TSX is a deep penetrator.  For instance the 225 gr TSX in a Whelen is equivelant in penetration and shock damage as a 250 gr standard bullet.  Same in the 30-06, the 165 gr is equivelent to the 180 gr in the standard bullet.  I would think the 200 gr TSX in a 358 loaded hot, would probably be equivelant to the 225 gr standard bullet in penetration, but may be more accurate downrange.

Thanks for responding Dude.  Just wondering, what ballistics are you achieving with your 35/200 TSX?  Do you have confidence in its long range (250-300 yards)  deer performance?

I've reloaded with some 225 TSX's, but haven't shot them yet.  I have been very busy this past year and haven't shot much since last year.  I was going to buy me a chromograph to test them first.  I reload some with several different loads to see which load and powder works best.  I think I have too many guns and calibers and should simplify.

lgm270.

With the initial reloads I've thus far shot over the chrono using the Barnes 200 TSX and TAC powder, I am achieving an avg. MV of about 2,880 fps with a 5-shot, 100 yard group of 1.5". The accuracy is certainly not benchrest quality but more than suffices for what and where I hunt. This is in a 350 Rem Mag not the Whelen nor for that matter the 358 Winchester. Though I don't have my Barnes reloading manual in front of me, I remember that this load is good to at least 300 yards, not that I ever expect to shoot a deer that far. I have yet to use this combination for hunting, as I've indicated in my previous post.

You had originally asked about the 358 Winchester and the 200 gr TSX. However, when you expressed interest in the 35 Whelen ballistics, I figured I'd chime in on what I was getting in my 350 Mag and the 200 gr TSX.

Thanks for "chiming in" Rets.  I really enjoyed reading your  very informative post.  Good luck with your .350 Rem, a caliber I have long admired.

Too many guns?  Yes, I know the feeling.  Too bad you don't live near me.  Would love to let you use my chronograph on your .358.  Best to you and thanks for responding.
