Indiana opener
« on: November 15, 2009, 04:13:49 PM »
Like many fellow hoosier hunters, Saturday morning found my two sons, my son-inlaw, and myself on stand a 6:00 am. It wasn't long after shooting time that my middle son's .357 maximum cracked and a nice 4 pointer hit the ground. About an hour later, my oldest son fired his Marlin .44 mag and a hefty 8 pointer was brought to bag. My son-in-law got down about 11:00 oclock and walked across the field to tell me he had to leave and while we were talking a deer ran right under his empty stand. Oh Well. I changed my location about 1:00 pm and set up on an unpicked corn field that had 12 rows opened up next to a big weed field. Just about 5:00 pm a nice doe walked out of the corn and gave me a quartering away shot at 20 yards. At the shot from my 45 pac nor muzzle loader she ran down the edge of the corn about 120 yards and then swerved into the unpicked rows. I heard a loud crash and was sure she was down. Following a good blood trail , she was found about 20 yards into the corn. Today was spent processing these deer and they are cut, ground, wrapped and in the freezer except for some tenderloins for tomorrow's supper. An exhausting but rewarding weekend. At 62,  11 hours on stand is tough but I guess I am too stubborn to quit.

Great job! I also would have liked to seen his face :D

Our weekend was just the opposite, no deer on the ground. I am off for the next three days. Hopefully my luck will change.
Plus the boy went to the hospital yesterday morning, SWINE FLU!

Lonny, I may have figured out why you don't have your deer. By the times of your posts you may be sleeping in your stand. ;D Hope to hear a good report with pics. It's raining here.
All the deer hunters I know see coyotes while on stand. Most don't shoot them cause they don't want to spook a deer.
Hope the boy is OK! That Swine Flu can be bad.

Needless to say i dont sleep well. I get 3-4 hours a night.  I may catch a little nap, until the head starts to rock and roll. Heck I have not even been snorted at this year. But we are just not seeing them. Neighbors and kids included. The main area we hunt is still standing corn. It just rained so it will be there a while yet >:(. My buddy hunts over near Coydon, they are also not seeing anything.

I think it is time to find a new hunting area. From all the beer bottles and tire tracks, I think our hunting area is a popular hang out :(

OH yeah, for supper I had wafer venison with sauted shrooms and onions :P. Last years but still taste great!

Glad to hear your son is recovering. Your luck will change with the corn coming down.

Tamiflu is the drug of choice when the Flu is caught early enough.  I'm glad to read he's doing better.

Over here in IL :-X there's alot of standing corn too. Yesterday it rained alot and we expect more today.  At this rate, it will be a new year before the farmers are able to cut the rest of it.

Well, I think I am done hunting until the weekend. I disgraced myself and a deer and my shotgun. When I go back to the hunting area, it will be with a single shot :-\

I have always told the kids to take their time, be sure of their shot. Well yesterday I acted like a city kid playing rambo, and lost a deer. 2nd loss in 16 17 years.

Pulled up to our hunting area 1/2 mile off the road. Daughters boyfriend said there is a deer coming out of the corn! We loaded up the guns, standing behind the truck. Now I have not had a deer in front of me up to that moment, this season. A good bodied buck small rack 8 point comes out of the corn with corn stalks on his rack :D.
He was about 40 yards away. Then it happened, I lost my mind   :o. I emptied my moss-berg 500(never ever have I done that) as he trotted off. The friends gun jammed and never fired. The way he was running, I knew he was hit and going to fall over. For the next 4 hours, Had good blood even though it was raining. I tracked him thru a STANDING CORNFIELD, in the rain! gave up came home took a break, went back searched over the field again, along with a couple small patches of woods near by. Came home empty handed. This morning I have a major headache, body aches, throat is sore(good lord paying me back I think ;))

I did say this is the 2nd deer I have lost. The first was in 2003, with a bad shot from a bow. I sold the bow the following week. Now days if I bow hunt, it is in the late season with a crossbow.

Did drive around the neighborhood, with the spot light last night. Deer are running everywhere! Did see a few bedding down in open fields.

While we were out spot lighting. I snuck in our hunting area 8) Was hoping to hear the coyotes. Thought they may give me a hint were to look today. But no luck, they had not smelled it yet. Will check the area today for Turkey buzzards. If he is still there, they will find it.

Lonny, how much are you selling that bent barrel Mossburg for? ;D At least you know why you haven't been seeing them, they're wearing that new corn stalk camo ;D You'd have had that deer if you would have took a single shot. You were getting frustrated not seeing them and just lost control when you saw him. :o Grab a Handi and get back on the horse. It's pouring rain here today.
Lucky I still know where that skunk is laying in the woods. Dinny is back now. :D With all this rain he is getting a good bath and won't smell so bad :-\ PLEASE get a deer so I don't have to fetch him out of the woods ::) Good Luck! at least you know they're there. Just don't forget you spotlight. ;)

I took the Handi .44 this morning. But when I got to the area, there was someone else in one of my stands and another person set up in another area. Problem is they dont have permission! So I got irritated and come home. I think it is time to look for some lease property >:(

As far as the corn camo, I really wish I would have had a camera. He was to funny standing there with corn stocks hanging.

Also, I had my muzzle loader in the truck. I sure wish I would have grabbed it.

Didn't hunt the opener due to harvesting my one buck with a bow 11/04. He crashed a tree in his haste to get the hell away from me but I was lucky enough to find the broken part of the beam and point the next day. Waiting for muzzy season to get a couple does. Three years in a row of being bucked out for the firearm opener. Not bad for an ole guy.
