SAVANNAH, Ga. — An Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped her deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas.

Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, claims she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son — her mother — was overwhelmed by the task, already caring for three other relatives with health problems.

Her civilian attorney, Rai Sue Sussman, said Monday that one of Hutchinson's superiors told her she would have to deploy anyway and place the child in foster care.

She either needs to go overseas or be prosecuted for fraud. She was required to have a signed statement on file that she had someone to take care of her kid in the event of a deployment. Otherwise they never would have allowed her to join the military, or to stay in the military.

Failure to have a Family Care Plan is punishable under UCMJ, Artcle 92.

She is responsible for having a realistic dependent care plan... her supervisor, first sergeant and commander are also responsible for this. Realistically, all they can do is ask her about her long term care giver. They can't interview the care givers for every one in their unit. Yet another reason why I don't think we should have single parents in the military. They are a REAL drain on units and duty sections. Typically they are younger and lower ranking, they are supported by government subsidies in child care, WIC, etc... Sometimes they take up an inordinate amount of time and effort for their chain of command to "help" them.

If you are standing in a fox hole in some foriegn country and you have a child here, you are not a mother.

She needs to be imprisoned and the child put up for adoption. The child will be better raised by someone with moraily or courage.

She blew it and now needs to pay the price. The essential problem is that when you are in the military, they own you. They can do whatever they want with you and the only way out is to serve out the contract, die, got to prison, get kicked out, or become a fugitive. If you don't like those terms, then you have no business in the military. Family does not come first for any soldier.

No, I'm brainwashed with fulfilling my obligations and oaths, personal, public, and spiritual.

Brainwashed with not taking advantage of the Reserves pay and educational benefits and crying when you have to pony up.

Again, you can squeeze this lemon any way you want, but if she could not fulfill a promise to fight and die, than she should not have signed up, plain and simple.

And lastly, I don't care which stranger asks something so desperate as to care for her children while she fights, but I would consider it seriously, as a Christian and American. She had/has other options.

BTW, where's the father? And why did she decide to have a baby if she was already enlisted? Without a plan as TN mentioned, she should be court martialed.

In this country no one is forced to join the military. If you CHOOSE to join the military you do so with the understanding that you may be deployed, you may be deployed in a conflict you don't believe in, you may deployed to a place you don't want to go, and you may need to leave your family behind. These are not surprises, these are the realities of the job. If you can't handle that part of the job, DON'T TAKE THE JOB.

She should be required to pay back all the money that was spent to prepare her for war, all the money spent on her salary while stateside, and then put in jail. It's cowardice and ignorance, and I honestly can't believe anyone would defend her.

Well said Dukk! I like millions of other soldiers had to leave my children in others care when going off to war. It was hard but we all came through it fine. Both my son and daughter are currently serving in the Minnesota National Guard. If called they will do their duty.

No one has been drafted into the military. All are volunteers. We had a coward in our unit, he was is and will always be nothing more than a sniviling coward.

I'm sure this young coward will get plenty of sympathy, as the saying goes "birds of a feather". I'm sure there are plenty of cowards who will back her. They come from the parasite class of humanity and they deserve no toleration.

As a mother myself I have mixed feelings. I personally would NEVER join the military because I feel it is my priority to raise my children, but I am blessed with a man that supports us. Being a single mom must be a difficult task and I am sure the military was a very appealing option. If she thought she had child care when she joined and the situation changed then I can't blame her. I would NEVER leave my kids without DEPENDABLE care for them.

Now as an American Citizen I am quiet pissed. She enjoyed the benefits of the military and then skipped out on her obligation to fight. The energy and money wasted on her sickens me.

There is two sides to every coin and I can see both sides of this one. It is just one of those issues where I can't force myself to choose a side.

No one forced her to sign that contract. She went into it knowing she would be required to have someone take care of her child if she was deployed. She drew a paycheck and enjoyed all the befits as part of the contract. Now it's time for her to fulfill her part of the bargain and she refuses.

She should have to pay back all pay and allowances, then serve time in Ft Levenworth. Who is going to care for her child then. If Grandma can't, Social Services will. She should have been thinking about this while she was drawing that paycheck.

Part of the problem is that a lot of people today join the military for its advantages, but are not willing to accept its disadvantages. They think they're going to work for McDonalds.

Heather: I have known many single women, and Men in the military that had kids. Oh they have all kinds of problems but they work it out. In the case of children, if circumstances change such as losing the person that will take care of your children, the single Parent needs to let the military know. One of two things will happen, they will be given time to find and make arraignments with someone else, or they will be discharged real fast.

I am on record to take care of several children in the event of a deployment of their parents. So it can be worked out. The couple that lives next door are both active duty. Usually they are not sent togeather, so the one left behind takes care of the kids. Last year She was still in Iraq, and He got sent to a forward operating base three weeks before she came back. Their son is 12. I took him with me everyday to the shooting range, then the rounds of gun shops, eating lunch in town at what ever type of restaurant that fit the mood that day. Then a couple of times we went on an overnight trip down a river, or across a lake. Now he keeps asking when they are both going back at the same time.

Where this woman messed up is that she did not say anything till it was time to go. Therefore she should be prosecuted.

ok i respect others opinions.. but things change as to child care..my daughter would have many family options ,in this situation.. if she doesn t .. right or wrong a mother is gonna take care of her baby .. mabe she should look harder for family help ..also mabe the military should look a motherhood as a reason to
adjust some plans.. no mother should ever be forced to give her baby up.. now thats just crazy..
also totally against the strongest drive a human can have on this earth..
i know my wife stood in front of a shotgun when her ex was planning to shoot her son..after she got her son outa there ..he laughed an said karry you don t really think the things loaded do you ..then he stepped out side an let off 2 rnds..wasn t long after that ..she put a lotta distance between her an him..slim ... again with respect for your opinion..
ps now im old fashioned but is not the main purpose of our military ....to protect the women an children back home..
i know this ps is gonna make as many women mad as men.. but it is the way i feel..so have at it.. i don t think im gonna argue much ..knowing im way different than the modern thinking..

Slim: The military at one time said no mothers with children at home. But the women put up such a clammer that they opened it up to allow mothers, then single mothers and fathers, as long as they had someone to care for the kids. This woman said she had that someone till it came time to go. Therefore she is guilty of fraud in my opinion.

Another interesting set of statistics comes from combat situations where women are present. Pregnancy rates among female soldiers run about 10% in combat zones. Women who weren't particularly popular back home are suddenly quite popular. The Israelis learned this long ago and, contrary to popular belief, do not integrate men and women in combat situations.

Women shouldn't be allowed in the military in the first place! They are emotional critters! That's why they make good mothers.

I'm one of those weird fellas, that believes the good Lord made us different for a reason.I say discharge her and make room for a man. Now I'll duck my head and wait for the volley!
