Federal Value Pack 200 rounds of 55 gr JHP in .223 Rem
« on: November 16, 2009, 05:12:42 PM »
Was at my local WW and found the Winchester white box 45-gr JHP value pack of 50 for $24.97, and then looked over and spotted the Federal Value Pack of 55-gr JHP 200 for $74.97

Just thought I would throw this up for those that do not reload.

Seems like a pretty good deal on the Winchester White Box.

If you do the math it comes out to $ .4994 per round for the Winchester White Box and $ .37485 per round for the Federal. In the end it would greatly depend on which one shot the best in YOUR .223.

For a comparison, not counting brass it costs me $ .288695 per round to load 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with H-4895 Powder.

I have shot some of the 45gr. Winchester USA White Box JHP's in a Stainless-Synthetic NEF Handi Rifle in .223, and they printed about 1" groups at 100 yards. I can not comment on the Federals as I have not shot them.

Larry handloading is always the cheapest way to go  ::)  But while standing there today, I did the math and the Federal Value Pack was by far cheaper than if someone grabbed 4 boxes of the Winchester white box having the same round count of 200.

I'm going to be doing some testing in my 24" bull barrel as soon as it gets here to see what it likes in its 1 in 12 twist rate.  I have a bunch of empty brass already and more on the way.  ;D

Well, I said the White box was a good deal because $24.97 is about the most I'd ever pay for .223 ammo and then I'd have to be pretty desperate for it since I reload for it. ;) I was comparing it in my mind to the boxes of Remingtons at my gun dealer's shop: $30.00 per box of 20. 50 for $24.97 just seemed like a good deal.

And it is a good deal. Just yesterday I looked at some Federal Premiums in .223 (no I wasn't intending on buying them) and that price almost scared me. Yep it was over $30.00 per box of 20.

I have shot some of the Winchester USA White Box 45gr. JHP Ammo and the only .223 I ever tested it in actually shot good with it. I have never shot the Federal Bulk JHP's, but a buddy has shot some of the Remington Bulk JHP's and they shot good in his .223.

Larry, I know it. The price of loaded ammo is just outrageous with the exception of a few good deals here and there. I'm almost ready to splurge for all the dies and components to load for 35 Whelen. I just can't justify paying $40-$50 (if not more) for a box of 20 Whelens even though I just love shooting that cartridge. I've pretty much shelved the 35 Whelen until I come up with a way to feed it more economically.

Skunk I know exactly what you mean. I recently acquired a new T/C Encore Rifle in .30-06. I have been working on and shooting that Rifle since September. It shoots good and I really enjoy shooting. To date I have put almost 240 rounds through it (all but 20 rounds were handloads with Noslers). I would hate to think what it would have cost me to shoot that much shooting Factory Ammo with Nosler Bullets.

In fact I just shot 3 more groups with it this morning, and now am officially done shooting it till our Deer Season Opens this coming Saturday morning (Nov. 21st).

Then I can start over as my new .22-250 Encore Barrel should be here by the weekend, but probably won't get to shooting it until Deer Season is over. Then I can concentrate on getting the .22-250 dialed in for Coyotes (and yes it will be shooting handloads).

Yep, will be handloading as well because the prices are just plain out of wack.

Yep I started handloading all of my Rifle & Handgun Ammo in 1978. In the years since then I think I can count the times I have used a Factory Loaded Cartridge for Hunting on the fingers of one hand.

I do not load my own Shotshells, I just don't shoot enough to justify it, besides loading my Rifle and Handgun Ammo keeps me busy enough.

What started out as a way to save a few bucks on my shooting turned into a hobby and then into an obsession.

I have always stuck with the Winchester "white box" it does what I expect it to.I've never been let down &
it shoots extremely well out of my Handi.

The WWB 45 gr. JHP's are only 40 rounds per box. They shoot great in my Rem. LTR.My local Walmart has not had any of the Fed. 200 bulk pack.I wish they did,I like to try them.
