150gr. Hollow Points for 30-30??

A buddy gave me a brand new box of Winchester Super X CXP2 hollow points.  Can I use them for deer?  I have never used hollow points, always use softs, but with the rising cost of ammo I am just curious if I can use these, and what would the results be.  Thanks in advance guys.

Winchester dosen't show the bullet you state in their current lineup so I don't know the intended use.

What color is the box? Does the box have any pictures of animals? The older boxes did not but the newer ones will have a varmit or deer or elk to indicate the suitable game for the bullet. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hmmmmm I had to go check a box of Silver tips but surely CXP2 is the labeling for Light thin skinned game like White tailed deer . I would guess that Winchester have updated their packaging and I am assuming your talking about the :-

I have some older white boxed cartridge of this type and they cane be destructive  I shot a Red Fox at about 60 yards with one and the exit hole I could put my fist into.

I have not seen the 30-30 hollow points used in about fifty years.  I can recall a couple boxes of them around the house and a guy dad hunted with used them.  I recall at least one nice 4x4 buck being taken with a hollow point at close range.  I can recall that a bullet was recovered in the off shoulder.

Is the design the same as it was in 1958?  I do not know.

Yep it is s silver box..on the back it has different classifications of CXP's  Mine is the CXP2 to be used for klight skinned animals such as deer, antelope, mule deer and bear.  It looks like the same box that I get my CXP soft points in.  So I am assuming they are intended for hunting purposes.

Yes they are meant for hunting and from what I have observed in using them on Fox they will work providing they're accurate out of YOUR RIFLE. Some rifles it seems don't like them. One fo the boxes I had only gave 3" groups at 60 yards from my rifle yet another box gave a 1 1/2"-1 3/4" group at 82 yards  same type just different lots.

The CXP coding system is Winchester's way of helping the consumer know the appropriate use for the ammo.  CXP2 is specified for deer-sized game.  I think you would be well served by the HP ammo for deer and antelope.

I used to shoot the Winchester 150 gr. HP ammo in the 1960s.  As a teenager I spent a fair amount of time sneaking up on groundhogs along the edges of creek bottom fields in mid-Missouri and popping them with my Win. 94 at short range with the HP ammo.

This big muley was taken with plain Remington core-lockt ammo featuring 150 grain round nosed bullet. Good accuracy and predictable performance keep me buying Remington ammo year after year.  No one is paying me to state this fact:  Remington core-lockt is deadliest mushroom in the forest and foothills.

Hollow tip bullets often destroy good venison if the shoulder is hit.  Wait for a good shot through the ribs.

Don't tell me Photos don't lie  C'mon everyone "Knows" that the ole 30-30 can't kill deer no more  were'nt much of a deer killer decades ago despite the hunters claims  .

Nope modern deer are just too tough for the old 30-30 you need one then new super short magnums to even hope to kill a modern deer. Heck it's in about evey gun rag printed so it must be true

  This fall I shot an antelope with my Marlin 24" 30-30.. The destruction was extensive compared to one shot with a 150 Grain Silvertip.. I have several boxes and will use them, but will probably go for lung shots. This one caught a shoulder. I think they would be great for putting deer down quickly if one was in heavily hunted country...

I bought several boxes of those hollow points once upon a year. I still use them. They've preformed quite nicely in all of my shooters. My box is white with the red super X logo. The end flap is marked with Winchester Super X, X30301, 150 grain hollow points. I'm sure that they are at least more than ten years old. There is no doubt in my mind that these were made with deer in mind. From your discription, I believe that yours are newer manufacture than mine. Use them on deer with confidence... I do!

I bought some Winchester hollow point 150 gr bullets over 30 years ago at my local gun shop.  They were old stock and had been in the store for years.  The bullets looked like fn slugs until you looked at the front end.  The core was a flat slug of lead down inside the jacket with almost a 1/4 inch of just jacket in front of the core with a big hole in it.  I loaded them in my 30-06 and found they shot well so took them hunting that year.  I typically hunted in three states at that time (Maine, New Hampshire and New York). I killed three deer that year with those bullets.  I liked them as they killed really quickly so lost deer or lots of tracking were avoided.  Where I hunted in those days cover was thick and if a deer went 25 yards after being hit finding them could be difficult.  As I recall all three were shot in the lungs. All three were penetrated clean through the chest cavity and out the other side and all three dropped in their tracks or darn close to it.  I was so impressed that I spent time looking for more of those bullets but never found any available.

I use to use the silver box hollow points.  They destroyed too much meat for me and I feel I lost a couple of deer at longer distances due to poor penetration. I saw a couple of bloody messes with no deer to be found.  As far as I know the hollow point 150 grain Winchester silver box is still being made.  They have them at our local Walmart.

Here is a young forky that was taken with plain 150 grain core-lockt ammo.  He wasn't armor-plated either.  30-30 is a KEEPER!!
