High Performance 22 LR ammo
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:57:34 PM »
Greetings,

I'm looking for actual experience with 22 LR on inedible larger small game, such as fox or coyote.
I want to anchor them, as I don't want them to run off & suffer and meat damage is not a concern.
I'll be using a Marlin M39, as I fear that hyper velocity ammo would be too much for my Ruger 10/22.
What type of ammo has worked well, or poorly, for you & your buddies?
Has anyone tried the CCI Quick Shock segmented ammo?
I suspect that penetration may be a bit too shallow for my purposes.

Thanks.

I have taken several yote and 2 bobcat with my 10/22. My prefered round is the cci mini mag 40 grain hp. But I have also used the rem GB hp. If your going to push the 22 into predator hunting, keep proper shot placment as your first priority. Avoiding head shots if possible. I have drilled a dog in the side of the head and had it get up and run. I had to mow it down with several more shots. Was not my best day. I can understand the attraction of using a small cheap to shoot 22, but if your are bent on really putting the boot to them without suffering, a 22 mag minimum would be a better choice or upward into the centerfires like the 223. Just my opinion.

I'm not so much into hunting preditors, but in keeping varmints under control. I have to be concerned with stray shots (and noise to a lessor degree) so centerfires are out. I don't have a 22 mag, except a revolver, so it is pretty much LR or nothing. I am very much aware of the importance of shot placement, but with a smaller caliber bullet performance becomes very important too.

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't understand what that means.  ??? The hyper velocity rounds are just as safe in all guns chambered to .22LR as any other .22 LR round is. They aren't gonna harm your rifle.

They do a bit more damage on small critters but don't have quite the penetration of standard rounds due to the lighter more fragile bullets. I'd just use standard HPs and the CCI Mini Mag HPs are my favorite among them. I do agree that the .22 LR is a bit light for fox and coyote but properly placed should do them in. I'd not bet on them not running off however. Keep your shots close and make sure of shot placement and they should die tho you might not be able to recover them.

My 39A loved Remington Yellow Jackets. Their design is awsome and will do the job if you do yours.

I've tried the Quick Shock in my .22's and they didn't group very well.  If I was in your position, I'd use the Ruger for it's faster follow up shot capability, but either rifle is good.  I've found Federal Spitfires to be accurate.

Ruger advises against using the cci stinger in ther 10/22T model rifles. I am not certain why, but I think it has something to do with the slightly longer case and following increase in preasure. Might be I have it all wrong though

The case on the stinger is longer than the long rifle case.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought it was not a good idea to use hyper-velocity rounds out of an auto loader. Or is that "internet" wisdom? I have never used them, so have no real idea.

HMMM - perhaps I'm going the wrong way here - reduced penetration doesn't sound like a good thing in this case!

Thanks for the feed back

I'll get a box & see how they shoot.

Thanks for the feed back. I haven't found any Quick Shocks around here & have never even seen Federal Spitfires. It seems my rimfire education is sadly lacking.

CCI Velocitor will do what you need  within reasonable range.

Aguila made a hyper round for the 22LR, a 30 grain bullet at about 1800 feet per second

They shot good out of my 597 Remington semi-auto, never shot anything with them.
But they have a report much loader than other 22LR rounds and made some “big” holes in trees. Not sure if they make them anymore. I bought a few bricks a couple of years ago

I know this is an older post. Most auto loaders don't have problems with hyper 22 ammo but I think you shouldn't feed it a steady diet of them as the recoil from them will beat up the buffers . I ran a lot of CCI stingers thru my Henry Survival and they eventually broke the stock where the bolt was slamming to the rear, Henry did replace the stock but advised against using them in excess. But  they also stated they were perfectly fine to use in my Hoo1 lever action which my son has and they are very accurate from it. I also have the Henry Hoo1M and the difference between the Hoo1 using the stingers and my H001M using CCI maxi mags are minimal and both will knock the snot out of foxes or ground hog's out past 100 yards.
