Another option, of course, is the Blackhawk in 45 Colt. Modest handloads, or factory will get the job done, and it can be had for reasonable prices. I like the .41 Mag, and have owned a couple. They are light, and potent handguns. Unfortunately they are just not the most powerful thing out there so they have fallen from favor. That means that bullet molds, components, and perhaps even ammo is in shorter supply. I think this is really unfortunate.

The Ruger Bisley Hunter worked out great for me this last Sunday evening on this little late season Mule Deer.

I would suggest a .45 Long Colt loaded with a Keith style cast lead bullet. This would be easy for you to do since you are already reloading. You can vary the powder to control the recoil to your comfort level. I would definitely go with a Ruger.

Go to GunsAmerica.Com or Gunbroker.Com or Davidsons to get the best price you can find. I looked at a Ruger with both the 45 Long Colt and 45 ACP cylinders and it was pretty cheap as I remember compared to retail gun shops.

The other suggestion would be a T/C Encore or Contender. You could go 45 Long Colt, 44 Magnum, or go with a 7mm-08 . Once you buy an Encore or a contender, new guns are only a barrel away !

Good luck.

41 mag
44  mag
45 colt

all  the same   [almost]

shoot  the same  weight  bullets  [almost]   recoil  concerns  so  no  advandage  to  44 or  45
you  reload  so  you  control  the throttle

41   shoots  a little flatter for  same  recoil
45  makes a bigger  hole  for same  recoil
44  has the  best  and  worst  of  each

witch  is  easyest to find  ammo  and components  for?   this is  a consideration
which   has the most  gun  choice [629 if it were  me]?      [take what you get a deal  on]
will  you  ever want a companion  rifle for this  gun??   [44  is   most common]

If you handload, your choice of caliber should not be based on availability of factory ammo. You can find brass and bullets for the .41,.44 and .45. I can't remember the last time I bought any factory ammo except for .22 rimfire. My new .41 Bisley Hunter arrived Wednesday and I will shoot it tomorrow.

45-70Gov:  I agree with most everything you said until you came to most commam rifle.  Back east it may be 44, but with the Cowboy shooters out here 45 Colt is King. ;D

When I worked at an indoor range, 41, 10mm, 45 Colt and 38 Super were the rare finds.  People who shoot them usually reload. 8)

Funny you should say that, my own Bisley SS 357  loves the 180 grn bullets also. ;D  I had not shot it for some time, then a friend gave me some 357 loaded with 180 grn JHP.  They were a kick to shoot and the Bisley Vaquero shot to same point of aim as the 158's.  That is all I have shot in it since. 8)

Since the gentleman reloads.......I'd suggest the 44.  Load it anyway ya want.  From 44 Sp. to heavy 44 mag.  You'd be good to go for anything.  The components for the 44 are much more readily available than the 45 ( at least where I live )and a tiny bit cheaper.  Not sure what your price range is.......but there's a lot of 44 out there.  Don't rule out a Super Red Hawk.......yes they're ugly, but they're also strong and accurate !  I've seen them for 400 to 500 on the auction sites.  Good Luck
I am in agreement with the 44 mag. Especially if you reload. Anything from mild to wild. I have the Smith 629 and it's nice with a better out of the box trigger BUT I prefer my Rugers either the regular redhawk or the super redhawk. You can't beat the free mounting system That comes with it. I keep all my deer shots at under 100yds and it has been a one shot kill on all the deer I have shot.

With respect to Lloyd, I favor 45LC over 44 magnum.  I'm an old guy; tried 'em all, and have concluded the 45 is a better stomper than the 44, with less blast, less pressure, less recoil.  My current deer load is a hardcast 300 grain flatnose over a dose of 2400.

I got around to shooting the new .41 mag Bisley SBH Hunter yesterday and it does very well. I also have them all - .357, .44 mag, .41 mag and .45 Colt. With a good .41 and .45, I could do without the others.

Like i said mike. I do own and shoot a number of 45s too and for someone like me that loads and casts its about a toss up. but in my opinion the average guy that is just going to have one or two handguns i think hes better served with a 44

Alternative approach....get a used Blackhawk, then order a factory Bisley grip frame and Hammer from Brownells.  I picked up a used Blue Blackhawk in 45 Colt and added a standard factory grip frame in Stainless and modified a factory Bisley hammer.  Interesting combination, relatively easy to convert, now wishing I had a longer barrel.  Looking at dovetail cutting the front sight mount and adding a gold bead rifle front sight.

Then there are those of us who have 41's and 45's and don't want 44's, regardless of gun. After a bit, it becomes a matter of personal choice. The old Ford:Chevy thing; at least to a degree. Within normality, there is nothing that has a legal season in the Lower 48 that the average handgun hunter is going to tackle that any of the three won't handle. 41's are getting hard to find components, agreed, but not impossible. The stuff is out there. 45's probably are more difficult to extract the accuracy of either the 41 or the 44, but are accurate enough for the job with appropriate practice.

Two years ago, private sale, nearly new 45Colt Bisley Blackhawk Blue, $385.00

Can't be in a hurry, if you are bargain hunting. Whatever your choice, you will be the winner!
