Loads for 45 LC in 7 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:48:27 AM »
I have recently purchased a 7 1/2" Ruger BH. I currently load for the a Marlin CB 24" in 45 LC. The Marlin really seems to like 21 grns of IMR 4227 with the 250 grn XTP's. Has anyone done a similar load for the Blackhawk? If so what were your results. Ideally I would like one load for both but I am willing to go a different route with the Ruger if I need to. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The pistol has not arrived yet or I would be busy actually trying things out. Right now I am just trying to get a head start and kill some time at work talking about something I really enjoy.

You should be fine for both. I load 27 grs. of H110 with a 250 XTP, and use it in a Bisley and a Handi-rifle. It runs 1200 out of the pistol and 1600 out of the rifle.

John R. your 45 load seems quite slow for that much H110 (27 grs) in the handgun, just asking. 23 grs will run a 300 gr slug (cast) well over 1300 fps. I'm betting that same bullet in your handi rifle is a real tiger on game at 1600 fps, expansion would be impressive!

my elephant-stopper load was a max load of 2400 with a 250 grain hornady xtp.

The cast slug doesn't have as much friction as the jacketed slug. Sometimes H110 will be a gr. or 2 slow in a given lot. We haven't recovered a slug from a deer out of the Handi yet, but the people i've loaded it for say it puts em down hard!

I use 8.0 grains of Unique and heavy cast bullet for a plinking load.  Very accurate, mild recoil, and general all purpose round.  Same bullet with max load of 2400 is also accurate, but does have associated recoil.
