Patty's .22 Mag fails to fire.
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:33:54 AM »
In ten shots, several will not fire the first time.  Not very acceptable.  What now coach...the BB trick or what?

Thanks,

Pete

Bad transfer bar more than likely, how are the pin strikes? If they're good, it's bad ammo, bad t-bars are s a known issue with the Sportster.

Hope it's not a common problem I'm interested in one Sportster 17 hmr. What is the BB trick?

The only BB trick I know of is for improving ejector function, it's listed in the FAQs.

Tim, the strikes are light.  I assume then it is the transfer bar.  What's wrong with it?  Fix or replace?  thanks.

I'm sorry about the BB trick thing.  I meant it as kind of a joke cure-all, and not as a fix for this.

You might try the drop the hammer slowly while holding the trigger back all the way and see how much firing pin is protruding from the breech face, if it's less than about .030", remove a little off the face of the hammer where it stops against the frame and see it it works then. I just checked two of my SS1 frames, one has .032", the other .033" pin exposure. How's the transfer bar look, real floppy or relatively stable compared to other frames? Madison won't send transfer bars, but Brownell's will if you choose to buy a new one and replace it or have your smith replace it.

Tim, I know we do this loaded, of course???  Seriously, where do you store all the information you have for instant retrieval.  I have never seen anything like it.  At one time, I thought to marry you, and then I realized what a bitch it would be to live with someone who knew everything.  Then Patty, the Ponca Woman brought me to my senses with her tomahawk.  End of problem.

Thats the answer to the problem.  The firing pin is barely out there.  I'll shave a little off the upper hammer face and that should do it.

Thanks again, Tim

Well that's fixed.  About a two second touch with a light stone in a router did it.  Now the firing pin flattens the case rim nicely where it strikes.  I ran a dozen rounds through it without a FTF.  Thanks again Tim.
