I have tried both for shooting IHMSA. IMO, the scope was a better fit. I couldn't find a red dot that had a small enough dot that wouldn't cover up the target at 100 yds.

The scope will always be more precise.  The reticle will have an intersection to use as reference but the dot lacks this.

Some people misuse dots and sight them in for the impact of the rounds on the top edge of the dot like a snoman.  The problem with this is that the dot "grows" over distance.  If it is a 4 moa dot at 50yds its roughly 2" at 100yds roughly 4 inches.  That means the outside edge is an inch higher at 100 compared to 50.

A dot when used correctly, the group should impact the center of the dot  for your intended zero range then it will rise and fall through its trajectory.  The problem is if you are shooting something smaller than 4moa at 100yds you can't see it.

The dot is more combat accurate...  the encore is precision, Scope it!

I was looking to use this under 100yds. Shooting squirrels, trap line and plinking.

I use a 3x9 Long Eye Relief scope on my .223. If I can keep it from bashing my forehead, you should have no trouble with a 22LR. It has a wider field of view than a pistol scope and costs less.

good luck,
