I'm a dumb a$$
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:43:25 PM »
Ya know, last evening I sat looking at a big doe, two of her fawns and a yearling.  Now that yearling would have made very nice table fare.  They were give or take 200 yards.  I was holding my Handi .44 mag with a red dot, and my .45-70, scoped, was a reach away.  The shot was too long for the .44 mag, and the light too low for the scoped .45-70 with my bad right eye.  I let them walk............... In the middle of the night, last night, I woke up kicking my butt.  I CAN shoot LEFT HANDED.  Dummy!! Why didn't you do it with your good left eye and the .45-70 left handed??  68 years old and still trying to learn.

;D  You couldn't know how many times i have done the same thing, maybe not about takin a shot but about about a bunch of other things, Pardner

I did walk up on a big boar hog in the brush once while retrieving a dove that I shot in south Texas. Had a 44 mag on my hip but shot the dang thing with #8 with a skeet barrell about five feet away. I still wake up wondering what in haites was I thinking.

Its funny in a way, the older we get the better we do things......old things....the new things create bigger problems that we're not to quick to solve.  Getting old isn't for sissys.

Oldshooter:  Got you beat.  We were hunting ferel goats, and I was about 13.  I was carrying a Savage 30-30/20ga.  I was walking quietly trying to sneak up on a goat I saw up on a rock bluff.  Suddenly there was a goat hiding in some brush about six feet away.  When I saw it the goat charged.  Instead of shooting I beat it over the head with the gun, knocking it down, and kept beating it till I was able to jump on top of it and twist it's neck to hold it.  Never once thought of shooting it till after I was sitting there holding it down, screaming for help.  Took forever to get my pocket knife (Old Barlow) to cut it's throat.

Heres one,
Last year I was pulling out of the lease with a doe in the back of the truck (muzzle loader).
about 100yards down the road was a dead button buck and the side of the road, that was not there 2 hours ago (it is dark now). I got out and looked at it had a scuff mark on the head but no other damage, FREE MEAT!
I took my drag rope that has a slip knot on the end and as I was slipping it around his neck to drag over to the truck, he rocked his head very slightly, I wrapped the end of the rope around me wrist 3 times and had it held between my fingers, with about 2' between the deer and my hand, pulled my knife, pulled up on the rope to lift his head, and slit his throat.
Then all hell broke loose, in 1 bound he flung over my head, hit the ground, flung back over my head, ran circles around me, all I was seeing was hooves in my face. took about 3 seconds to get that rope off my wrist, seamed like hours.
He finally died and I put him in the bed of the truck as another car pulled up, the man asked if I need any help, just then the deer kicked out 3 times against the side of the bed.
I stopped at 7-11 to get coffee and was getting lots of looks, when I got home I saw I was COVERED in blood.

Never stop learning.

Slack, that must have been a sight to see ;D :D

That's exactly why I carry my Blackhawk.  Every "dead" deer gets another .357 round in the back of the head.  They could really mess you up.

You guys are too much. Pete I feel for you.  I have yet to put a doe in the freezer this year.  Hope our luck changes soon.  I usually get something during our early muzzleloader season. But not so this season.

Your not a Dumb Ass I am a dumb Ass!
I shot my First Elk many years ago in late November, I was Deer hunting but always have a Elk tag just in case. I was working early morns 3:00am till 11:00 so after work I went hunting. As luck would have it a Storm blew in wile hunting temps droped to almost -30c I was going back to the truck when I saw them walking right up to me the shot was easy about 175 yards from me and about 1000yds from my truck. A, I learned after fighting to feild dress it and move it around just a normal 4 pointer not a monster this was not a one man job, I was full of piss and vinager and would not give up I even tried to drag it lol! Oh I should add I shot him in the last minutes of leagle time around 4:45/5:00 pm Darkness was coming. I was getting ready to quarter it to load it up when I herd the ranchers Truck he saw my headlights and went to check it out. As soon as he saw my old Truck a 68 chev he new who it was. First thing he said was why in this weather would you go hunting? And dam your a dumb ass you could have gone back to the house and asked to borrow the tractor.
I told him I felt bad about driving in on the ranch road through his land I had permission but it did not feel right to me as I always drag, or like now use a game cart for deer Dam them carts are good! But back to the elk I was so cold I did not even notice how cold I was, his wife took one look at me and said your staying for dinner get some hot coffee in you and some hot food. I did not get home till 9:00pm that day! No trophy but my second best hunting story! And some great Elk sausage too.
But if something like that happend today I would pass up the critter, even if it was a 7x7 Royal Bull okay maybe not I would build a fire  ;D

I think they call those senior moments, but believe me they are more than just moments.

The other day I crawl into the blind and I'm sitting there trying to put everything into it's proper place in the dark, and I start to panic!

I forgot my binoculars.   That's a big no-no when your an old geezer and can't see.

I started to get out of the blind and leave because I can't see squat at distance without them and able to distinquish if the deer has head gear or not, and just then I realized, "hey dummy that scope will work!"

It's bad when you have that feeling, or little voice in your head telling you messed up, but you don't listen.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Don't knock yourself Austin.  Two years ago, I sat on the edge of a large chasm, and saw a deer on the other side.  Just as he got to a clear shooting lane, I whistled at him.  Instead of stopping, he immediately turned into the chasm.  After a minute, he stuck his head up, 20 yds away.  Instead of waiting until he was over the rim, I shot him in the neck.  Now he's in the bottom of a gully you could hide a large house in, plus I'm 1000 yds. to my truck, with no road.  About an hour and a half later, I sat on the tailgate of my pickup to stop my knees trembling and catch my breath, and sat staring at my friend's Cub Cadet with the key in the switch.
