crowned barrel
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:00:06 PM »
Does anyone know the benefits of having a "crowned" barrel. If there are performance benefits...does this option look ugly???? Have not seen a crowned barrel in person.

All muzzles are crowned. It's a prerequisite to shooting well. Some muzzles have a recessed crown to better protect the rifling at the muzzle. Some also have a "deep dish" crown, which also protects the rifling at the muzzle and provides a cosmetic enhancement. FA has offered the first 2 as standard on their guns, depending upon the caliber (my 252 and 1 of my .357's has the recessed crown as standard). The "deep dish" is offered as an extra cost option. One of my .500WE's has one. I doubt that the deep dish adds much if any of an accuracy enhancement to a straight wall pistol cartridge barrel, but it IS attractive. Deep dish crowns are common from SSK, Magnaport, and Gary Reeder.

IronAir: that certainly answers the cosmetics question. Very nice business end of that revolver! I am now leaning towards this option on the short barreled FA I keep mentioning (dreaming) about in my previous posts. My understanding from the FA website is that this option slightly reduces overall barrel length as well. Any affect on "flash" from the barrel with the recessed crown?
p.s. thanks for the photo, says a thousand words as they say. The magnaports and (express sights??) are cool too.

Ken , thanks for the detailed lesson / info on the crown issue. I agree they are attractive. So, if I understand you correctly, the "deep dish" crown just adds extra protection to the rifling than the "standard" crown that comes with most base FA revolvers. Sounds like inexpensive insurance against premature barrel wear if one does a lot of shooting. I think FA wants like $80 or so for this option?

Free4ever,
I'm sorry, but I cannot answer that question for you.  I found this picture somewhere on the internet and threw it in my "Freedom Arms Photos" file.  Someone that actually has this option could tell you if the picture looks like what they have or not.

IronAir, no problem. I really appreciate the photo that you supplied, regardless of the source. Thanks again! :) I'm adding it to my own FA photo folder! :)

Here's a link to a photo that shows a crowned barrel on a Freedon arms 454.

gjn...that top picture on the link you posted gave me goose bumps (the FA with the scope totally cool). Now I need an M83! I'm selling my wife's shoes on ebay to fund the purchase. Do you think she will mind?

If she really loves you she would very happily go without shoes so you can have a Model 83.(not!) I really like the octagon barrel and it looks great with a scope and no front sight. Even with a round barrel I like that clean look with no front sight.I really like the look of that crown as well.

I have the recessed target crown on a 353. It is not dished and is more of a 90° crown, but recessed. I like the look and prefer 90° or 79° (I think that's what it is = the old 11°) crowns, so I like mine. I can't say why, or whether it's better. I do guess it is slightly better protected, but bump it right or wrong and you will damage it anyway.

I wouldn't pay extra money for it, but think it looks cool.

Yes, all of the photos above are of what I referred to earlier as a "deep dish" crown, not a recessed crown...FA actually calls it an "Inverted Crown". It is not available on .22's, .357's or FG guns.
The recessed crown I referred to above is as WL44 describes. It comes standard on the Mdl. 252/353's (and 83's in .22 and .357) I have seen, including my own. It does quite an adequate job of protecting the rifling at the muzzle, it just doesn't have the cosmetic "pizzaz" that some might seek from the deep dish crown.

Crowning is simply squaring the bullet exit hole so the gases pushing the bullet apply equal pressure to the bullet in all directions.??? If someone can explain this better, please(be my guest) do so?
