Bad Brass or Extractor ??
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:51:25 AM »
My 20 inch barreled Ruger 257 Roberts won't extract Hornady Lite Mag Ammo using Frontier brass.  I can see the extractor grab the rim on the way in, but it won't pull the brass out.  The brass is not tight in the barrel as you can tilt the rifle up and the brass will fall out.  Keep in mind that the extractor works fine using Rem, Win & Star brass.  Do you think I may just have a bad box of ammo?  Incidentally, this ammo is flat out not accurate in this rifle, three to ten inch groups.

Razmuz :  If you can mike the rim on the cases it may have enough difference to cause the extractor not to completely close on the case, and siunce that ammo dont shoot in your rifle and your rifle shoots the other brands without any problem I would discard the hornady and stay with the others. :D    JIM

Your right Jim.  I guess I'm just pissed about the $25+ I just wasted on this ammo.  However, I am going to mic it as you advised.

Bad Brass or Extractor ??

Razmuz,

Maybe not.

The Ruger has a reputation for rolling the edge of the extractor when the bolt is closed on a chambered round.  You only have to do it once and the edge can roll.  This minute rolled edge prevents the extractor lip from snapping over the rim when the bolt is closed.  If those are nickel cases the rims will be just slightly thick.

A light stoning of the inside surface of the extractor hook will remove the rolled edge.
