250 WFNGC Pet Load - Velocity?
« on: November 19, 2009, 02:44:05 AM »
Spent more testing time at the range yesterday - my 44mag RB (8 3/8") loves the 250gr WFNGC over 10.5gr Unique. So much so that I don't think I'll experiment anymore with 2400 etc. (Pulled a 2.5" group at 75yds and similar at 100yds).

I do not have a chrony but playing with PointBlank software I'm suspecting a velocity of 1150 to 1200fps. Does anyone have supporting data? (Zero'd at 75yds, at 100yds the group was 3.5" lower).

It looks to me that at 100yds I should be hovering around 1000fps, yes? This should be plenty good for whitetail, correct? Hopefully all shots would be much closer than that... if can ever get a deer to cooperate!

As an aside, my buddy had his new Trophy 2X6 on his SRH454 - all I can say is "sweeeet" and I have to get one to replace my dot.

Thanks

Are you casting your own bullets and if so what molds are you using?  Are gas checks necessary at these velocities?

I don't cast my own. The 250gr were from BearTooth - WFN - gas checked.....

Could possibly be but, with my S&W 629-4 Classic with a 6 & 1/2" tube I get around 1050-1100 fps? Every handgun is different even with exactly the same components at the exact same weight.

I'm using this same load in my 7.5" and 4.6" .44 Super Blackhawk. I get complete penetration of deer & hogs.

I also use the 10 gr. Unique with a 265 WFNGC in a 7.5" and a 4.6" .45  Blackhawk.  Same results.
Similar accuracy.
