USH 20 with Original style Brenneke slugs
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:35:36 AM »
I traded for a barrel from the WTT's, the barrel being a long wanted USH 20 gauge. My long term plans are to work up 20 gauge FH loads in brass cases but my immediate need was to shoot it. I tried to find some Remington Buckhammers, Accutips or just about any kind of slug designed for rifled barrels. No dice apparently rifled slug barrels are not hot items here in Texas.  I rumaged around in my old boxes of ammo and came up with 3 boxes of Original style brenneke slugs of the 7/8 ounce variety. I mounted a 3x Weaver scope on it, bore sighted it and then got it on paper at 20 yards moving back to 50 yards. It took 6 more shots to get it centered and 2 inches high at 50. I did three two shot groups which were each overlapping holes in the paper. It took 10 shots so I have 5 left which will be plenty as the gun will most likely be used on a hog or at least to fill one of my doe tags this year. Fouling was non existant which is something I had noticed in the past with this load in smoothbores.  I also had some Remington sluggers but didn't want to end up doing a lot of cleaning.

I filled a doe tag with the above mentioned gun. Hit her in the last rib on her left side, she was angling hard away. The slug traveled the length of her chest and up into her neck. It didn't exit but she looked like the slug actually slapped her down. Entrance hole was huge, more than an inch across and it looked like a 1 1/2 inch of hide was ripped loose and carried along with the slug into her.

That's why Brenneke has been around for so long.  They work great @ most woods ranges.

Personally I can't see why Brenneke has been around for so long. I know  A LOT of guys that shot them at one time and lost A LOT of deer to them getting up and never to be seen again. I tried to get on the band wagon. Bought 10 boxes sighted it with them. I lost a real good buck because of them. I shot the deer at 40 yards broad side, hit the front shoulder and the deer left a good blood trail for 100 yards then nothing. Saw the deer a few weeks later limping around. The next year another guy that hunted this property killed him. The slug was between the hide and the shoulder blade. I know people that swear buy them. I had a bad experience. oh I forgot to add I was using the 12 ga.
God created man,Sam Colt made them equal.

RICKT-

As you have already found, the old style Brenneke slug is a fine killer.  Though not designed for a rifled barrel, it probably worked as well as it did due to the Brenneke slug being cast a little harder then the usual Forster (american) style slug, and way the cushin and base wadd are attached to the slug with a screw, so the whole thing goes down range as 1 unit.  I bet that wadd may have engaged the rifiling, gave it some spin.  Shot placement, even with a slug, still matters.  Deer shot with a one ounce lead slug at 1400 feet per second in the chest just don't run away and recover.

As Larry said they are very hard cast and don't lead the bbl as one would think I used to shoot them all the time out of my Mossburg slug gun they don't expand much but they do kill deer. Kurt

The old Brennekes were the most accurate slug I could find out of my smoothbore shotguns. They were very accurate, had great penetration, and were absolutley deadly on deer as long as you placed the shot where it should be....<><....:)

After Christmas I am going to order some of the Brenneke KO slugs to test in my slug guns. I always got good results from the old style, I hope the new ones are as good.

all I can suggest is you stay away from the 3" Magnums and stay with the 2 3/4" shells for accuracy sake. 2 3/4" slugs are all that's needed for whitetail deer anyway....<><....:)

I found the BuckHammers on sale at Cabela's and ordered a bunch of them.  They shoot great, easily as good as the Brenneke's I can't find anymore.  I just got access to some property 20 minutes from my house that is crawling with feral hogs of which I have already killed two. Did that with my 223 though. Shooting restrictions are 22 centerfires or shotgun and I feel the Buckhammers are better all around hog thumpers than my 223 which I just happened to have on hand while scouting the property. Wish the weather would ease up a bit!

I have killed the majority of my hogs with a 22 mag or 223. I agree the slug would be a better choice, but I never seem to be hunting hogs when I come across one. (The 30-06 tends to make a mess of squirrels so I opt for the 22 mag). No joke though, go squirrel hunting sometime on a place where there are hogs. You want be able to wade through the darn things, but just try to go hog hunting! They are ghosts when you are hunting them!
