Is it bad for a bronze cannon to be set into concrete?
« on: November 19, 2009, 11:10:38 AM »
I posted pictures of this cannon when I first joined the board.  I went back today to make sure I have all of the information that may be on the gun.  The only marks are on the breech end and they are the number 2 over the number 681.  No other marks are visible.  The cannon is set into concrete so that about 2/3 of the barrel is exposed.  The cannon has been identified as a M1838 6 pounder.  My question is, what should be done to preserve the gun?  Is it a bad idea to have it set in concrete.  It sits outside year round.
Thanks for your advice.

It depends where it is; some places are worse than others.  But it is never best to be outdoors unless it has been painted to protect it from the elements, especially acid rain caused mostly by nearby highway traffic.  The concrete should have some drainage passages under the barrel so that water does not accumulate in contact with the metal.

Tim ,can you see the trunion faces in the mount ?

I'm thinking maybe , it will be up to you to care for the thing . I bet you could convince the city to 'allow' you to be a caretaker of sorts ? Maybe just hose it down and wax it once or twice each year .

I've seem a number of bronze tubes that have been half-embedded in concrete for at least 50 years.  The bronze that was next to the concrete doesn't seem any worse for wear, although this may depend on the type of concrete.  Some which is fine and seals tightly against the bronze will not allow water in, and that's good.

The bronze that remains exposed to the elements is the part that is dissolved by the acid rain, as I think has already been mentioned.  Almost any kind of paint (NOT epoxy) could be used to keep the elements off of the surface.  If they want it to be the same color, gold paint could be used, or the patina color could be matched by a blended paint.  Wax is OK but doesn't last long, and it will keep the paint from adhering when someone finally decides they want it painted.  Any paint used must be of a type that isn't permanent, as being able to reverse the process (unpaint it) is one of the universal rules of conserving such objects.

Good answers.  Now my FEELINGS.

Is it bad to put a cannon in concrete?

VERY BAD.  Only one point of aim.  Usually put where people would be grossly offended when you fire it; probably calling the police and labeling you as a vandal.
