What do you guys think about this for a Handi Project
« on: November 19, 2009, 02:54:30 PM »
I'm new here and have been reading and reading and reading and did I mention reading through the Handi Rifle section for a few days.Let me just say I am already addicted to these fine little guns.

I have got a spare 243 Win barrel. It is a 24'' Bull barrel. I have been thinking about having it rebored and chambered for a big bore cartidge that isnt available through H&R.I have been researching an think I have decided on the 416 Rigby. According to Hodgdons reloading data site the pressure levels for the Rigby are below that of the 45-70 load data for the Ruger #1.I dont know about you guys but I think it would be kind of cool to have 416 Rigby in a Handi Rifle.Just keep in mind if I do this I will not be hotrodding it, but simply loading to moderate levels and have a little fun with it. Just think of the awww factor when you go to the range with a 416 Rigby Handi. So what do you guys think.

Won't work, too much backthrust.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

It might work at reduced pressures ok, but at full pressure, the huge .589" case head would create way too much breech thrust as Billy said. If you want a single shot 416 Rigby, get a TC Encore.  ;) If you want a .40 cal H&R, have it rechambered and rebored to 405 Winchester, but expect to spend about $300 for the rebore and a bit more for the rechamber.

Quick, Looking at the 450 3.25 that might work. And Hornady is making ammo for it now. That would be a new one in a Handi.

Lots of choices, the 45-120-3¼" is another that isn't as expensive to reload for as the 450NE and will meet or exceed the ballistics using smokeless powder, ala Tykempster.  ;D

But Tim if ya had a 450 NE, you would have a caliber no one else had. ;)

What kind of performance can you get out of the 405 Winchester. Thats seems like it might be a good candidate for my project.

I have a 416 Rigby in a Ruger one.  I have never shot a Handi configured in a way that I would want to touch off a 416 Rigby factory load in....

but I would like a 405 winchester.....

I get close to 2500fps with 300gr Hornadys in my 405Win H&R, but it has a 28" barrel, it's a rebored and rechambered 38-55 Target which is no longer available from H&R.

Its a shame they quit making the 38-55.I have got one and absolutly love it.Mine is on of the later ones that had the corrected chamber dimension.

That 405 sounds like it might be a winner.
