Liver and Onions Tonight!!
« on: November 19, 2009, 03:05:35 PM »
Hit the woods this morning at daylight, terrible day to hunt, 25-30mph winds and rain, nasty, so huntin partner Jack and I just drove around looking for a good clear cut to hunt Saturday when my son can go with us. Found a couple, but the wind was blowing so hard, I couldn't even keep my hat on without holding it on with my hand, took my hand off to load my rifle and ended up chasing the hat down the road!!  :o

Just after noon the rain let up, but the wind was still blowing, we were driving up an old overgrown logging road and a deer steps into the road about 50yds ahead of us, thought it was a doe at first, but after it moved a little more, we could see horns, so it was fair game, Jack stepped out of the rig and loaded his Browning Medallion while the deer walked across the road, hesitated a little, looked at us, stepped in into the brush, then back on the road and ran back into the brush on the side he came from, Jack was almost ready when he ran off, but didn't get a shot off, Jack started to get back into the rig and the little buck stepped back into the road and walked straight away from us, stopped, turned almost broadside slightly quartering away looking back over his shoulder then away from us, the 270Win 130gr Ballistic tip hit him just behind the shoulder, he jumped up in the air and zipped across the road disappearing into the brush, really thick brush, the kind you don't even like walking thru let alone tracking a deer, but the blood trail was excellent when we could see it, it went about 35yds and was dead when we got to it.

Glad it was a little one, spike on one side, little fork on the other, but it'll be a nice eating deer and it was fairly easy for two old guys to drag back to the road!!  :D

Maybe I'll get a shot Saturday!!  ;D

Call me nut's but after back straps ie tender loins I would say the liver is my favorite, okay I will say just give me the liver some onions and bacon, I like liver I just coat mine in flower with salt and pepper, I do skin my liver I know picky fry it in bacon fat has to be cast iron too. Use red onions for a sweater taste dam I love liver! But have to say a young deer tastes better than the old herd master but deer liver tastes better than beef unless it's calf liver.
I am trying to find someone that want's a whole deer I still have a WT tag that can be filled like shooting fish in a barrel lol I want to camp under the stars and enjoy a liver and onions. So hungry!!!!

Congrats Tim'
Glad you finaly got some liver. I still got some from the big buck,
not as tender as the doe were I shot 1/2 the liver to shreds :'(

Here is the way I do liver. Cut the liver in 3/8" slices. Sog in a pale of water over night or rinse several time if want to eat it right away to get rid of all the free blood. Drip drain. No salt in the water.

Lay out a sheet of wax paper and spinkle on a layer of White flouer mixed with pepper no salt. Dip the liver on both sides in the pepper/flouer mix.

Fry in Olive oil and chunk of butter on both sides when the liver is done put in the sliced onions fry them brown

When you put both on a plate add salt to taste. That is my favorite way to cook game liver, deer, antelope, moose and elk.

Sliced Pheasant and goose breast is good that way too.

I admit it I have been known to steal a liver from a gut pile!

I cut the liver into slabs about 3/8" thick. Fry up the bacon. while that's frying,I mix flour and pepper in a large zip lock baggie. Put a couple pieces of the liver in the baggie and shake till coated. Once the bacon is done I throw the liver in the bacon grease with some sweet onion and as my momma told me cook it till there aint no blood commin out of it.
God I'm hungry!

Congratulations Tim! Good friends and a good hunt.

My wife likes to cook the liver like most of y'all do frying in bacon grease with onions. The only thing she does different is when it's almost done she removes the liver from the skillet and makes gravy. Then she puts the liver back in the skillet and simmers it for another 15 or 20 minutes. That makes it so tender it melts in your mouth.

Yuck.  I hate liver and onions.  When I was stationed in Germany I came back to my room one day and smelled something foul.  I spent some time sniffing around the trash, the fridge, everything.  I could not find the source of the stench.  Some time later I went to the bathroom (shared with the room next door) and the stench was much stronger.  The guy in the room next door had been cooking liver and onions in a crockpot all day.  Man what a smell.

I'm glad you and Jack had a good day.  I hope your turn comes next.  It's great having a good buddy to share the hunt with.  Wayne couldn't come up this year for the first time in 20 years, and the full enjoyment of the hunt is severely lacking.  It's just not the same.  His business is very slow down in Florida, and he has a daughter in Grad school......the cash just wasn't there this year.

I'm the only one in my family also, But my wife is nice enough to always get some out if the freezer for me when she goes to visit her friend Vikkie's for the weekend. In my job I have to work every 4th weekend, and she tries to time her trips around the weekends I have to work. So I get to enjoy liver and onions about 13 times a year.

CONGRATS TIM!!!

We have a warm front going thru... been watching the temps in the garage close. its stayed in the 40's, but the temp outside have almost hit 60!!! Tomorrow is the same forecast, mid 30's at night and upper 50's during the day. I WAS going to butchered the deer this Sun... (We cannot hunt Sundays here  :( ) But that will now be done Sat when we get home from a quick morning hunt.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, the good news is it wasn't as windy today, bad new is it was 34º, snowing with 10-15mph winds with gusts to 25 when we got there, ground was just turning white, we did the best we could though, walked several skid roads near clear cuts, saw 6 elk and 4 does, a couple deer butts, no bucks, season ends tomorrow but I won't be going out, so maybe next year.  ;)
