Hit the woods this morning at daylight, terrible day to hunt, 25-30mph winds and rain, nasty, so huntin partner Jack and I just drove around looking for a good clear cut to hunt Saturday when my son can go with us. Found a couple, but the wind was blowing so hard, I couldn't even keep my hat on without holding it on with my hand, took my hand off to load my rifle and ended up chasing the hat down the road!!
Just after noon the rain let up, but the wind was still blowing, we were driving up an old overgrown logging road and a deer steps into the road about 50yds ahead of us, thought it was a doe at first, but after it moved a little more, we could see horns, so it was fair game, Jack stepped out of the rig and loaded his Browning Medallion while the deer walked across the road, hesitated a little, looked at us, stepped in into the brush, then back on the road and ran back into the brush on the side he came from, Jack was almost ready when he ran off, but didn't get a shot off, Jack started to get back into the rig and the little buck stepped back into the road and walked straight away from us, stopped, turned almost broadside slightly quartering away looking back over his shoulder then away from us, the 270Win 130gr Ballistic tip hit him just behind the shoulder, he jumped up in the air and zipped across the road disappearing into the brush, really thick brush, the kind you don't even like walking thru let alone tracking a deer, but the blood trail was excellent when we could see it, it went about 35yds and was dead when we got to it.
Glad it was a little one, spike on one side, little fork on the other, but it'll be a nice eating deer and it was fairly easy for two old guys to drag back to the road!!
Maybe I'll get a shot Saturday!!
