405winchester, while your at it, could you post a couple of pics of the rear end of that barrel, the welded end? (Also called the breech) We would like to see the fit, and the base plate, and casabel, if one is on there! Thanks, BoomLover

Ken at fox sent me a 1.5" carbon steel ball sample, the measurement across both flats comes out at like 1.47" and around the biggest part of the ball it is 1.55", so my bore will have to be 1.59"-1.6".  I am going to call Ken tomorrow and ask if this size will be the normal size sent out.  Hope to have some more pics for you guys soon!

I'm not so worried about the flats as the .05" over nominal dia. That could present a problem for guys who already have a 1.5" + standard windage bore.

You might ask him if it's possible he sent you a metric ball by mistake.

Here is a pic of the ball

it is sitting on one flat and you can see the other on top and you can see a band around the middle of the ball-this is the point that is 1.554"

With in the past 5 minutes I set an E-mail to Ken at Fox asking for an explanation.

And here is the response I just got from Ken at Fox

Quote
Doug,

That is a carbon forged ball – They have the 2 little flat spots on each end. These are the most common types of balls when in the range of over 1 ¼”.

The 42.8 mm Balls we are producing will be perfectly round.

Well got the barrel to the machine shop and the hole down the middle is egg shaped and to true it it would need to be bigger than the 1.6" bore for the 1.55 ball :(.  So it looks like i might be back to the 1.723 bore.  If its not one thing it's another!!!

Fox has many ball sizes; see if they have one between 1.5 and 1.72.

I'd go with that if I were you. Fox is going to produce nice steel golf balls for us at a good price.

Besides, cannons are like cars in a way; you get one with 200 horsepower, and after a while you want 300.  :)
