1961 Win model 94 value?
« on: November 20, 2009, 12:51:00 AM »
I have a 1961 Winchester model 94 and I'm thinking of selling it.  I was told it was reblued at some point but not positive, it looks nearly brand new I'd say 90%.  The stocks were refinished and it has a set of swivels on it as well.  The insides are not pitted and are again, like new.  It has a side saddle scope mount and I was able to shoot roughly an inch group when I sighted in this year before season.  I'm currently hunting with it but I now have a 308 as well, which makes more sense for me.  What do you think it's worth?  I'll try and throw some pics up this week.  I have seen them going from $400 to $700 but again, I don't know for sure if this has been reblued and I know the stocks were refinished so it's technically not "original".

With the refinish it has zero collector value so it is a shooter and nothing more. I'm sure not up to date on what folks are paying for them as shooters these days but not long before Winchester stopped making them I passed on a nice pre 64 (no clue what year of manufacture tho) at $250 in a gun shop I frequented at the time.

I seriously doubt folks are paying $700 for them. Some people might be asking it but I don't believe they are getting it. Not for a shooter only at least. My personal valuation of such would be along the lines of $300-$350 max but I'm NOT saying that's what others would value it at only what I'd consider it to be worth should I be interested in it.

I see original guns in excellent condition going for $500-700. I bought a 1940 something refinished 94 for $360 last month locally, and a 1941 tapped for a peep (with steel Lyman peep) for $430 from a gun store 2 months ago. Both users at those prices. My local store has a MINT 55 takedown for $1300.

Thanks, I think I'll start at $400 and see what kind of offers I get.

My son bought a pre 64, 30-30 never refinished like new but he paid 850.00 for it and I see them all the time in like new condition at gun shows for 500--900 but I think that is way over what they are worth. As Graybeard and collectors will tell you once you refinish you have lost the collector value and it becomes a shooter, but there again it comes down to someone willing to pay for what they wont.

What GB said ref "collectors value" but a pre-64 in any kind of shape is still worth some bucks.  Go to any Gun Show and you`ll find that out very quickly.   :)

    Traded off a Model 12 magnum we restored even up for this one. Dealer buddy got it in and called me about it - said it looked like it had never been shot, and neither of us could find a blemish on it. Made in '56 - 30-30. We restocked it with a basketweave claro blank we had laying around here, and put the factory wood and butplate away, along with the origianl sights. Williams FP peep and Marbles firesight, that we intend to change out with a white bead. Should get it checkered this winter too. Doubt if we hurt the value any, as we have the parts to put it back original. Made up into a pretty nice rifle. Never really cared much about them being original or not, just as long as they look and shoot good.
   Figure we have about 650 bucks total in it - maybe a little less.
                               Have a good one;

Nice looking winchester.  I picked up a 1963 a while back in nice condition, it was covered with dust from sitting around a while, first thing I noticed was the steel butt plate was perfect, no dings or bluing missing which told me someone didn't use it very much.  The top and bottom tangs still had almost perfect bluing on it as well. I checked the bore and that looked real sharp too,  so I took it home.  After having it all taken apart and cleaned up it looked real nice.  I paid 400 altogether for it with the 6% tax, I kept thinking I paid too much for a long time, but the bottom line is that was about what they were going for last year.  I put a Lyman 66 on it, knocked off the barrel sight and plugged it, now that I have shot it a bit I'm glad I bought it, it's not for investment it's for using and shooting.  We have an old school smith in the area here, I paid him $40 to take it completly apart and give it a good cleaning and check.  So I guess I have $440 into it altogether.  I have seen pre-64's popping up in the local papers this past few months, there are still millions of them out there, and with this economy people might be letting them go.
