Opening day of gun season November 21st
« on: November 20, 2009, 02:33:58 AM »
Guns clean and sighted in, knives sharp and the stands are set. How many are hitting it tomorrow. Taking my 91 year old dad out again and crossing the fingers he gets one or even sees one. The bucks are still rutting but on the back end of it so we should have some movement here in SE OK. Our place is one big scrape trail on a ridge above a creek bottom and the rut makes it great .  Happy hunting and no the dyna ain't going to tote the goat if I get one. I got a jeep and a one ton for that and the oil field roads we have to drive. A little warm this weekend lows in the forties and highs in the sixties but the temp drops off thru the next week.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Passed on a spike this evening and saw three does this morning but they were almost at Mach 1 when they came by me. The whole trip was worth it to take my dad and grandson.  Me and the oldest son were rattling at mid day and walked up on the creek. A pair of otters were rolling and frolicking in the pool above the crossing. Could have shot both of them they just stayed there playing and paid no attention to us at all. As soon as the digital camera came out they lit out like they owed me money. Would have luvd that pic to share they are rare around here.

Congrats Digger.

That's one you'll always remember.

I didn't see anything all week. Just when I was whining to myself about getting skunked a 8 pointer came by. He started quartering away and I caught him right behind the ribs and diagonally out the opposite shoulder. Dropped like a rock and I found the slug under the skin which is a cool trophy to have.

Good job Digger I have carried several times but have never had a shot. Good deal  Grim the season is just starting here so I'm not worried about getting one just worried about gertting the right one.  The pigs have been rooting around the haymeadow so I may have to spend a little time on it before the season is over.

I'm crossing the cheese curtain today to go hunting with my 15 year old son and some freinds.

We've got some private land to hunt but the owner only wants bucks taken. Hope we get the chance.

I watched some insects flying around :( This was my 29th year of deer hunting and my sixth year using a handgun only. More said in the Deer Camp thread of the IL hunting & fishing forum.

Setting on the ground which I never do but I was in a new spot and the tree I was going to hunt in was hiding from me. A buck walked in from the right and got within 15 yrds of me in the brush before I spotted him about 7:30. Of course when I turned my head he busted me just saw a glimpse of horns as he went thru the cedars. Turned around and found my tree about 20 yards behind me and got up in it. I have only had minimal success setting on the ground the way I hunt because I get in the thick for up close shooting. Sorry thier eyes beat ours almost everytime.

Landowner only wanted bucks shot so of course we saw a bunch of does. :-[

Nothing up there this year, but at least my son saw something.

My week is shot in the head. The oldest son is a fireman and has time to hunt during the week. He goes to the lease this morning and finds the large buck we had seen several times drug off into the creek with his head cutoff. Road hunting is common in the area and you can see them cruising the county road from my stand.  Not much you can do about it. I feel like waiting on the red 1 ton dodge flat bed that has bed road hunting our land for the last week and wearing him out for the deed but what good would that do.
