Both my son and son-in-law got nice 8-pointers during the bow season. I get up to 9 does and yearlings in my yard everyday (they are out there right now as I type this). For the last few weeks I've even been getting a couple decent bucks hanging out with the does, but they stay out of sight as much as possible. I should just stay home and hunt in my backyard, but it would be like hunting pets. 8)

We're pretty dependent on others pushing deer into our little area. The warm weather will hurt that since everyone will be sitting longer.
No matter too much. My daughter and I will still enjoy a nice day outdoors.  Hopefully she'll tag a buck (she's dying to shoot a buck) and the weekend will be even more enjoyable.  I've got the whole week off for the first time ever and can milk this season out awhile.

Stay safe everyone and you northern guys remember: Wolf, the other other other white meat.

Tribe,

Taking the daughter would be priceless. I also hope she gets a buck. She'd be hooked for life. Best of luck to both of you.

Fog didn't lift in our woods until about 11 or 11:30.

Still could see about 70 yds, which is exactly the distance of the buck my daughter shot at around 8:30 (her first buck-needless to say, she was excited)

When the deer was still-couldn't see it at all. Another 20 yds further and we never would have seen it.

I'll tell you one thing, it was a pretty tense and scary drive this morning, visibility in some low areas was literally feet.

Wow, excellent TribReady. Give that gal a big huge and Congrats from us. I'm happy for both of you. You are a good Dad and it's clear that She had a good teacher. It's nice to see that while some teens are hanging out on the streets and painting their hair green or pink, there are still some good kids that have fun hunting with their family.

I'm heading up Tuesday afternoon with my 15 year old son.

We've got some private land to hunt this year but the owner says "buck only".

Good luck everyone.

My oldest son got a nice 6 pointer on Sunday morning. That makes an 8 pointer during the first part of bow season and a 6 pointer during the gun season for him. Then, on Sunday afternoon, my brother-in-law asked my son if he could go hunt on the stand where my son got the 6 pointer. My bro didn't even make it to the stand and he got a 6 pointer in the same area.

Where exactly was that again?   Wait, wait, wait, I need to go get my map and GPS unit.    ;)

Seriously, though, where should I park my truck?

Trib,

They hunt up in the Nicolet National Forest (public land) and on Plum Creek Timber Company land, most of which is open to the public.

I have traveled to Wisconsin for a few years now to meet with Family and hunt the Bayfield area out of Washburn Wi.  Wow what a difference in just a few years.

First the Doe tags used to be $2 and almost unlimited.  now they are $20 and sold out way before season opener.  I got to go Buck only this year.

Second we used to see rabbits, squirrels, pine martins, chipmunks... small game.  Didn't see any and only a few squirrels.

Third, Wolf prints everywhere and only one set of Coyote...

All the deer tracks were large and only saw one set of Yearling or Fawn prints.  Seems the herd is suffering.

It was unusually warm and no snow.

I knew there were Bears but have never seen them out...  the warmth has kept them from denning up and my uncle walked in on one.

All this added up to no deer for any of 5 hunters and I chose to take my son on his first big woods deer hunt this year as he is 12now.

My son and I saw one buck for seconds before he was gone in the woods and never presented a shot.

Dissapointing to say the leaste.  I will have the memories that my son and I had together.  I wish I could have been remembering how he shot a deer though.

A good article in the NRA's American Hunter this month on Predation of fawns by Coyote.  Even a little applied logic should tell the DNR that there is an unbalance occurring.

Badge54

Can't afford to come back next year for a repeat of that.  Unfortunate for the locals that thrive on hunters coming in.  I heard a lot of the same from others also.

I heard on the radio today that the 9 day kill was down 29 percent statewide.  Lowest kill in 27 years.   We have to stop the doe shooting if we ever expect a good season again.  Never mind what the DNR says.

I wasn't implying that I was complaining about the doe price going up or the number of permits going down...  This is only an indicator that the DNR knows the herd is suffering great losses and is way down in the north compared to past years.

The article in the NRA Mag is all about the predation on 1-6 week old fawns.  Basically in uncontrolled predator areas the "fawn survivor rate to week nine was 27 percent."  In areas where the Coyote population was controlled the survivor rate "showed a staggering jump in fawn abundance after trappers removed 22 coyote and 10 Bobcats in a 2000 acre area."

Not the only answer but a part of the whole picture.  My prediction is Outlawing Coyote hunting in the north is going to cause a serious drop in the ability of the deer herd to return at all.  This along with a larger and larger wolf population will really hurt hunting in the north.

I agree it's going to take years to return.  I hope the DNR does what is right.

Did the 4 day doe season up north get cancelled?

My bad...  "Closed to coyote hunting during gun deer and muzzleloader seasons" Wi DNR regs.

I saw that in the regs and misread it to be all year...

Interesting read on the Wi DNR site.  http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/mammals/wolf/pdfs/wolvesdeer2009.pdf

Sorry for any confusion.
